Strange noise, like a can of coins, from engine compartment

My 2003 6-speed v6 started to make this noise while on the freeway. At random intervals, about 10-15 minutes apart, I hear a sound that is similar to a can full of coins shaking, or chains rattling, for maybe 2 seconds and then it stops. It sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment. Any help?

Does it do it at idle, or while revving while not moving? See if you can get a sound clip/video of it.

So far I've only heard it while driving on the freeway, but it only just started this morning. I'll try to grab a clip after work, but I'm not sure yet how to recreate the noise. On first observation I would say it seems to happen when I let off the gas on the freeway, but not everytime.

I'd poke around and see if any brackets, etc are loose. Skid plate? Weird..

Is that a brush guard on the front? Maybe that has come loose somewhere.

Will do. I replaced my master and slave cylinder about a month ago and my clutch is starting to slip in 4th and 5th, if that's relevant at all

Either way slap the edge of them like a tuning fork and see if that's it. My V6 did this and i had to replace a fastener. Mine did it only hitting bumps though.

it's a real high pitched, rapid squeaking? sounds like carrier bearing starting to go bad. letting off the gas is the major clue, at least for me. that was the first symptom for mine.

It's not high pitched at all. It literally sounds like someone shaking a can of coins right in front of the pedals, but clearly outside of the truck. Two shakes of the can and done.

So I didn't hear anything on my commute back from work. On the way there it was cold and there was thick fog, so maybe its temperature/moisture related?

Cat? Idk if its anything like my 2gen but when the cat went out it sounded like a few coins were rattling around somewhere and it took my some time to identify. Best part is it only happened when the truck was warm (driving for about 20+ minutes).

Ditto, here. It might be the cat converter has disintegrated inside. Mine did that years ago, and really scared me. Awful noise. At first, I thought my engine was toast.

If it inside peices get stuck they can clogg the exhaust and kill you engine. I drove it straight to a shop to get it fixed.

Should I just pop the cat off and take look inside? Between work and school I wont have time to look at it until thursday night, is there significant danger of me causing more harm by driving it ~100 miles more?

Could be a rock or something in a skid plate or heat shield, tap on your cat before you take it off. I had this prob on a 87 extra cab it was a exhaust bracket that came loose. I'd get under your truck and start banging on skid plates exhaust ect ect. Hopefully this will help you locate the noise. I totally understand rattles and squeaks suck!!!

im thinking carrier bearing. does it do it at highway speed when you let off the gas?

If its the cat, you should hear it while parked and revving up a warm motor.

It just depends on exatly whats wrong with it. if youve heard it for a few days and it still runs i would just try to baby it until I figure it out but i wouldnt stop driving it. I AM NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD DO THIS. im just telling you what i would do. it could be just a rock or one of the other things mentioned above.
