I've been having an issue that started about a week ago.

Sometimes when going to start my taco, when I turn the key I get a "click" - as if the battery were dead. On a second try, the truck attempts to turn over but doesn't: I don't hold the starter too long, maybe 1-1.5 seconds. On the third attempt, it starts.

This behavior is irregular: sometimes it starts first try - both cold, and after it has been running.

Sometimes the first set of described symptoms will occur both when the truck is cold and after it has been running.

I checked my battery and its good, and used my battery charger's alternator test function and it says its 100%.

Do the symptoms sound like they could be a starter issue? What else could I do in terms of troubleshooting to confirm or disconfirm that?

In terms of engine performance: it runs fine, its just starting is the issue.

It was in the truck when I got it - maybe 3 years ago. I can't recall for sure how long ago the previous installed it prior to my purchasing it.

It was at 80% the other day, I charged it to 100%

I'd buy a new battery then make sure all the connections are clean and tight.

does it matter what capacity a battery has left in it? Even if I charged it?

I think it's something about cold cranking amps. At least get it checked out but I bet its the battery. Buy a new alternator belt, too.

If your battery checks out good my guess is your starter solenoid is going out. Make sure all battery connections are clean and tight. Also make sure the big battery lead is tight at the solenoid. And battery ground is tight on the engine block or wherever it grounds. Hope these ideas help. Also if your cold cranking amps are low as mentioned ^ what your describing can happen.
