gas tank?

What size gas tank is on my prerunner? how many gallons? thanks in advanced

 

6 lug 1st gens have an 18.5 gallon tank capacity.

 

thanks for the quick reply I was just trying to get my ultra gauge as accurate as possible. it just don't seem like it holds that much but ok that's what ill leave it at

 

not a 1st gen. but they never seams like they hold as much as they do. v6 2nd gen hold 21G. i usually only put 17 to 17.5 maybe 18 at the most in when the light comes on depend how far i have to dive when the light comes on.I think if i get it right when it comes on it’s right around the 17gallon mark. one time i did put right under 19 gallons in after driving like 20 to 30 miles on the light.

 

Yeah, your owners manual will have this.

Personally, I have been able to put 18 gallons in mine, and it wasn't empty, still running. When the low fuel like comes on there is still like 3 gallons in the tank and the gauge itself is almost useless for accuracy.

 

The ultra gauge doesn't really use the tank size for anything but Miles(etc) to empty. It doesn't effect your instantaneous or tank MPG at all. All makes, models always show empty well before truly empty. Keep driving until you run out of gas and the you'll fill up 18.5+.

 

I've filled up well over 18.5 multiple times. My assumption is the tank holds closer to 19 gal, but since I drive up hills a bunch mine starts to stutter around the 18.5 point.

 

you know I dnt kno ifmine has a low fuel light. if it does it has never came on

 

If I was able to put 19 in mine, I would never go back to that place. That pump is cheating.

Not all of the trucks got a low fuel light. Depended on what the 'package' was I think. there have been a few discussions on this topic.

I'll put 6-6.5 gallons in and it goes to half a tank

 

One thing to remember is that with in-tank pumps, the gasoline is also the pump coolant. Consistantly running it empty will shorten the life of your fuel pump.

 

The pump counters are temperature-compensated to 60F or so. On a 20F day the pump will register 2% more gallons than actual volume pumped into the tank.

 

I have never heard this, but I have regularly read to buy gas when its cold so you get a bit more (cold gas is denser, thus the compensation you mention).

For one, aren't all gas storage tanks underground, thus negating any weather related changes to the temperature of the gas in them?

For two, how many gallons are in those tanks, 1000s? That's a lot of mass to change temperature, even if they were above ground. It seems like a storage tank full of gas would't move more than a couple degrees a day. My 25k gallon swimming pool moves 3 degrees after 14 hours of sun in the middle of July. Water is denser than gas, but my pool is uncovered, so evaporation is a factor too.

If the pumps really compensate for cold temps, I think I should buy gas when it's warm out. That compensation seems like BS.

You are right in that the underground tank temperature probably doesn't swing much within the span of a day. However, there is likely still a substantial difference between summer temp and winter temp. It's quite plausible for stored fuel to drop to 20F in the sustained cold we experienced this past winter.

In a period of sustained hot weather, the pump should register less gallons than the physical volume of gas pumped into your vehicle. However, the fuel is less dense.

This is probably one of the reasons aviation measures fuel by weight...

Exactly. The frost depth is currently around 50" on plowed ground, 36" on snow covered ground.
