So first off, this is my first post ever on here. Been a longtime lurker up until this point. So basically I'm looking to build a sleeping platform for my 1996 extended cab Tacoma. I primarily will be using it for surf trips and other light travel. I just was wondering if anyone could suggest a design that they used and liked. I would prefer for it to be light and easily removable and having enough room underneath it to store a surfboard is a must! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take some wood and build a platform with room to put stuff under. I would also get a canopy for it if you don't already have one.

I really like the storage options of the baja build. I don't know if I have the woodworking skills though for it though. Guess I could give it a shot haha

I built one recently (haven't posted about it yet) using just one sheet of plywood, 3 1x12" boards , a piano hinge and some drywall screws. Only used a drill and a circular saw. Simple but effective.

I happen to have a handful of milk crates, so I built it so that I could store gear in the crates underneath and sleep on top. Part of the platform hinges so I can flip it up and put a big cooler (or a small cooler and a small Rubbermaid tub) in the back. Only problem is, gotta remove that for sleeping purposes.

Anyway, if you're interested I could post or send you some pics. I think it was definitely a worthwhile investment.

I like it! I'd even skip the skip the bulky mattresses and just get a rubber bitch (https://books.google.com/books?id=j...wAg#v=onepage&q=rubber bitch mattress&f=false)

Ran into this guy wheeling several months ago. Clean setup. Not too detailed on the build, but it may give you some ideas.

I've been pondering building a sleeping platform as well.

I had a 'commercial' "carpet Kit" for the back. Two benches over the wheelwell and two removable center panels kind of a 1/4 & 3/4 split (one short, one long). Fully padded and shag carpeted (Baby!) Hinged access panels allowed access under the benches for additional storage.

    Perfect for surf trips...

Only picture that survived the transfer to the digital age. :(

1981 Toyota 4x4 22R, 5-Spd, lots of Rancho, Cepek and Downey components, dual shocks all four corners, f&r axle trusses, 36" Denham Ground Hawgs on Western Bullets 15"x10".

Loaned to a friend who rolled the truck, totaling it... back in 1987-ish

    But back on topic...

I'm also in the planning and research phase for a sleeping setup. I'd like to keep it simple and easily removable because I'll only use it for a trip every now and then and want to keep the weight out and bed clear most of the time.
