So I have a pretty bad oil leak around the oil pan gasket, on the passenger side. The guy I talked to at the parts store said it just uses RTV to seal the oil pan. Is this correct?

    Oh I have a 2001 2.7 l!

Probably. Use the black great stuff instead of regular though. Works better/faster.

yep sounds right.. pretty sure transmission pan is same as well. I think its only for the 2.7 by the way. pretty sure the 2.4's have gaskets.

I purchased a tube of gasket sealant from Toyota, it was'nt much more $$$ than the brand name RTV's at auto zone.

I did the same. They most likely will have it in stock too.

From the factory, Toyota uses FIPG (black) sealant for their oil pan gaskets, and an actual gasket (shaped/formed) for trans pan gaskets. Spend the few extra dollars to do it right the first time with the FIPG. Don't forget to clean the surfaces real well before reinstalling the pan, along with grinding/scraping the old/dried gasket off the pan.
