New factory OEM motor versus Yotashop?

    For those of you who know Toyota Tacomas really well and have purchased a rebuilt motor from "Yotashop" - I have a question...

    How do like the Yotashop motor versus the original? Do you think its quality is the same? Better? Not quite as good?

    My local Toyota dealer quoted me appx. $4,000 for an OEM short block and another $2,000 for the head assembly, etc., for a complete motor charge of $6,000 for the 2.4 motor for a 2WD, 2004 Tacoma.

    I e-mailed Yotashop because their motors look like and sound like they're put together really well and asked them to contrast their motor with a factory, OEM motor and they said...

    "We offer a engine rebuilt with components made from the same manufacturer that Toyota uses. We machine all our blocks for exacting tolerances. We strive to offer a Toyota quality rebuilt engine at a fraction of the cost. Toyota wants $12,000 for a new 2004 2RZ engine. At this price the engine will out value your vehicle."

    Better off buying a used motor and have a local mechanic drop it in or sell your truck and buy another one.

    Why do think so?

    If you're planning on keeping the vehicle for a long time, which I am, either a new or rebuilt motor is a fraction of the price of a different vehicle. I think the peace of mind knowing that you're the only person who's put the mileage of the new or rebuilt motor is a big comfort.

    Additionally, buying a used motor and not knowing how hard it's been driven seems like a huge risk, in MY humble opinion.

    Buying a used vehicle in general you have no idea how hard it's been driven... Toyota motors are good for 200+k miles, if you can find one at a junkyard with less than a 100k on it for a fraction of the price of new, I wouldn't hesitate.

    It would be hard for me to swallow spending $6000 on 10 year old 2wd tacoma. I rather put 6k down on a newer one, but if I was going to replace the motor, I would get a low mileage motor and pay my trusted mechanic. Cost would be more than half of the dealer.

    If you current engine can be rebuilt I would start there. Otherwise I would try to find a used motor and rebuild it. There are plenty of companies that offer full rebuild kits.

    I considered Yotashop for a 04 taco trd that i picked up cheap with a blown v6 motor but then i found a complete used engine with only 69k miles from a salvage yard on ebay for $1400 with shipping so i went that route and so far it has performed flawlessly.

    finally someone asks what matters lol.

    If you said Toyota wants $6000 for the motor (that's not a complete motor btw..that's just a head and bottom end. Or a longblock. Still need all accessories, distributor, sensors, etc etc), how did Yotashop come up with a quote of $12,000?
    You say it would be hard to swallow spending $6k on a 10 year old 2wd Tacoma (the truck is totaled at that point, btw), but when people give you the typical, and much cheaper, options, you turn your nose up.

    To actually answer your question, I would not buy anything rebuilt (transmission, motor, transfer case, rear end) by a large company. "Yotashop" (which I've never heard of) or Jasper or any of those companies.

    The only options I would consider for a replacement engine if the motor is blown: used low mileage from a wrecked vehicle or part-out, getting a motor from a JDM importer, or rebuilding the current engine.

    Rebuilding an engine yourself really shouldn't be that expensive if you can handle it properly. $150 for a cylinder bore and hone, $300 for new pistons and rings, $100-150 for new bearings, maybe throw some new rods in there (or just get yours shotpeened and the big end resized), maybe have your crank turned or polished if your machinist recommends it, new head gasket ($100-), new head studs/hardware ($100-), and timing belt job. If it's under 150k, I wouldn't bother with the head. If it's over ~200-220, I would find a used lower mileage head for a couple hundred.

    I completely agree and I live nearby two places that rebuild toyota engines. I just replaced my engine and chose to go with a low mileage oem motor.

    Time to revive this dead horse....

    Man all the hate on here for a remanufactured engine. Honestly I don't like putting on used underware so to me a junk yard engine will just not feel right. People have been rebuilding engines for years and to think that no one can build an engine like the guy on an assembly line is just nuts. Also how is it that rebuilding in your garage better than a rebuild done by a professional?

    The real question is why is there so little info on yotashop engines? It's 2018 and I still can't find any good reviews.
