quick deck plate question

i am a newbie to mods and i figured its safe to start with a deck plate. i have an 03 prerunner v6. i looked at my local west marine and they sell 4" and 6" deck plates. i remembered on the article that you can use anywhere between 3-5inch deckplates. is it impossible to fit a 6" one? would it really make any difference over a 4" plate? thanks.

 

6" would be pushing it. I've never heard of anyone using a 6" deckplate for this mod, I really don't think it would fit. A 4" one would be perfect IMO.

also, did anyone block off the area in between the airbox and the engine to keep from sucking in hot engine air?

if you go 6" the winshield washer fluid filler would be in the way I believe

 

yeah i figured that once i started looking around a little bit.
i had a jc auto shop teacher mention a mod similar to this and said it is smart to block off that space to try to get more fresh air from under the tuck. i was thinking it would only be an issue when running the engine for a long time. good to see it doesnt make a difference, less work for me thanks for the help.

 

In order for that to work you'd have to put a "Ram Air Hod Scoop" thing in above it... still wouldn't be that effictive though.

 

I agree with the opinion that this would be a total waste.
I mean just think about it, with where the opening is located, your are guaranteed that the moment you begin to move, fresh cool (relatively cool) air comes in.

I just put in a 4 inch deck plate thanks to this fine thread. Thanks guys! It's on the side of the airbox facing forward and the truck feels way peppier at low speeds and highway. I certainly hope to get some MPG increase since I'm not burrying the throttle as much to get to speed. Awesome.

 

can somebody please post a pic of thier deckplate mod. Call me dense but i look at my stock airbox and I just don't understand 8-(

Thanks for the pic of the deck box I'm going to install one on tues, I already use a k&n why does everyone reccomend the amsoil filter??

 

amsoil filters alot better than the k&n, and it also has a better flow....via tests. nothing wrong with running a k&n....just always keep it clean and dont over oil it.
