Hello all. I have decided to jump to 4.56 gears in my 97 2.7L 5spd tacoma. I will be getting the front and rear done at the same time obviously. I have a 3" suspension lift and 32" tires. My research these past couple of weeks has led me to believe these are the gears I want for what I am looking to get out of them (daily driver/weekend trail rig). As far as lockers go, I would love to have a locker in the rear but I just don't have the funds to go that route at this time. I have even thought about trying to somehow make a factory elocker work with my truck, I think that would be sweet. But right now I'm looking at about 1500-1600 bucks for the whole deal. Questions, comments, concerns?

Are you going to do the work yourself? If so, you could afford gears and a rear ARB for $1500. (Just keep an eye out for a used locker. You can get them for $500-$700 fairly frequently)

Complete OME kit w/ 881's and dakars. All-Pro Sliders, CB, HAM Radio and various other minor stuff.
With 32"s and 4.56 gears, you'll be turning over 3,000rpm's at 70mph in 5th gear. Not bad for a crawler rig but may be over geared for a DD.

You'll want 4.10s. They are perfect for 32s.

No I will not be doing them myself. I was lucky enough to get hooked up with a toyota tech that will do them on the side for about 500 rather than me paying toyota 1700 or more . A locker isn't my greatest concern at this point so much as gears are. I feel like I need to do a ton more research so I can get the locker thing right the first time and not overpay, even though I know I'm overpaying by not doing gears and lockers at the same time.

Yes I will be high in the rpms at highway speeds. Interstate driving is not something I do often however. Most roads I drive around here don't go over 65. So I think it will be good to put that power where it is needed :D. I also consulted with chase at ecgs and he told me that 4.56 gears are what I want for my four cylinder, and that 4.88s will be too deep.

I know it will but that's ok. It's already off by some. I found the tire size calculator on this forum to be a HUGE help in knowing about my current speedometer difference and what gears will best suit my larger tires.

I'm sure 4.10s are perfect for 32s if I was looking to get right back to stock gearing. But like I mentioned to dispatch, I'm looking to get a little more than stock gearing without over doing it.

Thank you all for your input. I don't like making big decisions without consulting with other members here because you all seem to have much more experience with these things than myself. And forgive me for making mistakes because as you see, I am a member-in-training. lol

Soo I see that you are still in need of a tenth buyer. However, all that stuff on the first page makes almost zero sense to me . I am pretty certain that in going to 4.56 gears for my truck I would need this package (non elocker) http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-17347323-1995-5-2004-tacoma-gear-package-4-56-ratio.html. Now how this package figures into the information on the first page of the group buy thread I have no idea. I am definitely interested in saving money especially if you guys are in need of another buyer so you can all save and everyone wins :D

I just switched from 358 to 456! That's why I mentioned speedo. I'm off 15 mph. It sounds like we drive similar roads, the difference is unreal in power. Barely use 1st gear. I live in the country and mountain area and love the new gearing. I think you are gonna be happy with the new gearing. Drove 17 yrs on 358. Now 2 months on 456. Starts hurting gas mileage because cant keep my foot from pushing gas pedal!! ha ha

Haha nice man! That's good that you don't use first that much because I find myself using that gear way too much. Like I should be in second a lot of the time but I'm so low in the rpms that she starts to shudder. And ya I'm sure gas mileage is gonna suck. It already sucks. But I'd rather be able to go where I want with ease than my truck slowing down while pinning it up a hill lol. Power is more important to me than gas mileage. So if you're truck says you're doing about 45mph you're really doing about 30? or other way around?

I pretty sure the list is a generic list showing what most people may use, I would give them a call on Monday or PM Chase or both. They will help you choose what you basically need and most likely get GB price and help make it happen.

I think you'll love the 4.56 gears. My truck is an auto with the 2.7L. It came from the factory with 4.56 rear end. I think it has plenty of power but with 32" tires I always wonder if I would feel a difference with changing to 4.88.

id consider trying and finding some OEM 4.30s then. 4.56s will just be too much i think.

Yeah it'off on high side like you said. I just came back from fishing in moutains, cut across small mountain on the way home. It's a typical 2nd to third to 2nd and so on. I drove the whole way in third ! 17 yrs crossing this mountain with 358. Big difference. Much more power in 5th also.

Haha. I went muddin' today for a good 4 hours and it was first to second to first to second everywhere I went. And 4Hi to 4Lo to 4Hi. Haha it gets old. Probably wouldn't hurt to have more in 5th as well. Nice. Thanks for sharing your experience with the different gears.

Some oem 4.30s would probably do me really good. Especially for trying to get back to stock gearing I bet. I'm just so set on 4.56s tho. Haha. I'm also curious to try out nitro gears and see how much different they feel from stock. If there is a difference.

I swapped my 95.5 5 sp into 96 with auto trans.(456) I don't know if all the 2.7's with auto trans came geared this way.

I could be wrong but I think all auto transmission 2.7L prerunner trucks are 4.56.

I think quite a few 2.7 auto trans came 456 stock. My 96 is sx, don't know if that has anything to do with. My truck is 4x4 also.
