    Chopper678 Im a 3.4 and going 65 hwy I can get 24-25. For weight Im probably close to smmarine and I weigh in at 3600 give or take whos in the truck. For city I get 17 driving normal. Thats a constant throttle just keeping it steady and full a/c. Now any city driving and its down to 18-19 it seems

    Honestly as long as im above 16 mpg for the tank im happy. Do I like better mpg yes but im not going to do anything crazy to get it. For hwy I just drive it at 65ish and city I dont hammer it from a stoplight. Most of your mpg is all down to how you accelerate

    Have you ever checked to see if your speedo is accurate going 35 mph and above?

    You're on 30" tires, my guess is your speedometer is reading faster than actual. Which means your odometer is inflated as well.

    yeah its a little off. I mean I never get 24-25 unless I baby it like crazy. Maybe its lower than that since I dont account for the bigger tires but eh im not a crazy mpg person. But you do have a point that it may not be the actual mpg.


    Just did a very rough conversion and it shows 23 and some mpg if I was constant at 65. Ill try a true one since I have alot of hwy driving just since you got me curious

    3" lift EIBACH coils w/ 5100's front, OME/ Dakar leaf springs w/ toytec adjustable shackles at 1.5" and 5125's out back. 33x10.5x15 KM2's Relentless DIY steel bumper.
    Not sure about the low end torque but high flow cats are not enough for tacomas, gotta be at least California grade or California emissions compliant if you live in Cali (maybe NY?)

    I paid 250 for one and 290 for the other. For Cali grade magnaflow cats it was a good price for direct fit. There are other good brands like Walker or CatCo.

    To avoid the wrong type of cat make sure the code under the hood matches the codes on the cats. (Don't remember the code, maybe Evap Family?)

    hahah like I said I almost never come close to that and it wasnt adjusted for it when I did. But I do get 19-20 since I do drive hwy alot more than you. Maybe its that leaky axle you have ;)

    For reference I'm on 31s and my speedometer reads 2-3 mph fast when going 60-65 mph.

    Yeah I understand what you mean it just slips my mind so I never do a correct mpg calculation. Ill have to keep that in mind for my next full hwy tank just to see what I get under normal driving

    Yeah, take a look at your GPS (if you have one) or one of those road side speed meter things. You'll notice you're probably pretty off in terms of actual speed.

    And it's not linear either, the faster you go the more off you'll be.

    I looked a while back it was somewhat close at 55 I remember but 65 was off some I dont remember how much though. (its been about 2 years haha) Im sure its an inflated now that I think about it. Ill have to see what my stock tire size was to compare to the new ones just to see the actual difference

    That is a big gap. I get around 18 city and 21 highway.

    Man that is a lot! But your truck is much lighter than I thought, and that could be it. I am 5350...

    I have been meaning to see; what is the best way to accelerate? As slow as possible? Surely there is a range, because if you accelerate too slow you are taking unnecessary time.

    I have heard that the speedo comes out of the box reading 5% over. I have 30.6" tires and read about 2% over. I have heard certain tire sizes actually fix it. small 32s would most likely fix it.

    Bingo! But I wonder what the verdict is for double cab 2nd gens. Also, what's better, 1500 or 2200? And what happened to people saying always accelerate under 2000?

    It's complicated. Your peak Break Specific Fuel Consumption and Peak Torque Curve on your engine along with your gearing are going to determine what your revs will need to be to achieve optimal acceleration. For the most part though, you want to accelerate fairly quickly to take advantage of your engines best torque range. Trial and error is your friend, when you have instrumentation. It's easier to say, "shift at x rpm", but the better approach is to shift when you'll land at the right rpm in the next gear. That varies with each shift, though.

    Mikeyjd I assume you are manual because 73-80% load wouldnt keep me under 3000 rpm even. Funny Ive never heard of anyone accelerating like that but Im not gonna argue which is best for gas cause I have no proof just personal thoughts hahah

    For an auto, I'd recommend probably at or just under 2k rpm's for acceleration. You don't want to delay upshifting by accelerating at to high a load. One way to trick an auto trans (albeit slightly), is to accelerate harder to approach 2k rpm, then back off acceleration as you approach a speed that your engine will shift. You will have to learn shift points for this to work well. The best efficiency with an AT will come with the torque converter locked up, usually at 40+ mph.

    All city I get about 16-17mpg. All highway at 60 on this long trip I just took I got 23.5 first tank, 22.5 second tank. If do 70, it drops to about 20mpg. The torque converter just locks at 46 on the first gens, so the closer you stay to that the better mpg you get. At 46 my instant mpg on the scanguage is 26-28mpg

    Wow! I figured the highest MPG speed was about 38 (Highest gear lowest RPMs, being careful not to downshift)
