    I got through the 2nd tank of gas in my truck (2.7 ,5 speed , 31.5 tires ) only getting 17.5 mpg. Is that normal? I was hoping for more like 20 -21 mpg.

    Yep. The rolling resistance of those tires is very high.

    If you went to stock you'd see 20/21. But that's it. The 2.7 isn't a new design.....combustion chambers, aero, and direct injection would be the only things to change it's efficiency.

    Use less skinny petal. I get about 17 out of my auto v6 on 31s. Whats your gear ratio?

    I do have my cap off. My gears are 3.89 I believe, going by the door tag.

    3.89 might be a little under geared for 31s. At least I think so. My v6 has 4.10, with a 4 cyl i wouldn't want less then 4.56. If you are having to give it a lot of skinny petal cause of the gearing and tires, that is your problem

    i com 2300 ham radio. for hunting (170 k miles) list of replacements since 166k miles: 4wd solenoid tailpipe muffer catalitytic conver exhaust manifold
    1995 2.7 with 225/60/15 i get 22.5

    17.5 is right in the ballpark,,for having a cap and non oem tire sizes.

    Every truck is a bit different,,so results vary no matter what you do to try to correct it.

    Maintenance has a huge part of it too along with tire size, weight, and aftermarket add ons such as aftermarket bumpers, light bars, etc..

    I'm getting about 310 miles on each tank.

    Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
    The 17mpg depends what the the stock tire size was. My truck is stock with 31 x 10.5, except for a K&N flat replacement filter. I've been driving it since new, 260,000 miles now. 20mpg city/ 21-22mpg highway.

    If you have auto locking hubs, I'm pretty sure they're always locked and the front axle is always spinning. So yes it would improve mpg. I just don't know how much. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

    Those tires are causing you bad mpg, take those off and put the oem size tire on, and you mpg will go up. Me, I don't care about mpg, love my big tires. I got 37's on my Ram 3500 (diesel) with a 7" lift. I get about 10.5-12mpg in my diesel truck, and spend 120 bucks to fill the beast up. You gotta pay to play...

    could be a little from the tires, 31" (30.6) is the norm for 4wd. with 3.89 gears, doesn't seem right to me but maybe Toyota liked to mix it up, but usually 4.30 so maybe need better gearing or to even bump down more on tires?

    Even my v6 is a 4.10. I would say the tires/gears are the problem. I would go to at least 4.30, but probably 4.56. I thought most 4cyl 6 lug came with 4.56, but I'm finding out it's almost impossible to guess haha

    So far, highway driving (200mi R/T) the best I have gotten is 21.5 mpg with 4WD V6 stick using cruise w speeds 65-70 & tailgate up. I have 4.10 gears & stock 265/70R16 knobby tires. Basically this is totally stock, as delivered in 2004.

    Since I drive this route 2-3 times ea week, I really need better mileage. At my destination I must have 4WD. (My 99 2WD 2.7 Taco automatic got 30mpg, but could not get up my driveway.)

    I am looking into 3.91 gears and Manual Locking Hubs. (Actually buying these items presently.)

    Also plan to buy skinny low-rolling resistance tires in the near future. My ultimate goal is 25mpg highway.
