I just bought a 2003 double cab prerunner and the dome light is completely off. Bulb and fuse are fine (by visual inspection). I used a multimeter to check voltage at the contacts in the light and nothing. Does any one have suggestions on a likely location for a break/short? Or any other thoughts? I've checked around on the forums a bit and can't find anything that seems to help.

Front dome light added, light reminder added, door chime mod, added 2nd gen 4runner headrests, grey wire mod, 2lo mod, more later.
Is it possible someone unhooked the dome light switch wire behind each kick panel? Take off your left kick panel you will see a plug with three wires one black one black and white and one white and blue, the black, and black and white are for your dome light circuit the white and blue is for your third brake light I believe. The plug I'm describing is behind the interior fuse box you will see these wires coming out of the pillar, maybe someone unplugged the plug, hope this helps you. Let us know.

On my 96 the harness connection is behind drivers kick panel. If you locate that you can check for power there. Maybe someone with 03 can help. My harness has like 3-4 wires. It's obviously not big. It controls 3rd brake light and rear view mirror light. GL

When my dome light went out I pulled it and it looked fine so I started in on the fuses and couldn't find a problem. So figured I would just spent a couple bucks and buy a new bulb just in case and it lit right up.

Some times new bulbs are bad. You could try another one. Where we are telling you is not the fuse box. It could be fine at fuse box. It's the connection behind kick panel.

Thanks for the responses. I'll definitely check that connection behind the kick today and let you know what I find. I was *just* about to run out for a new bulb when I checked the fixture with the multimeter, and since I didn't get any voltage I figured that could wait til I sourced the current problem.

Not being a smartass but did you tap it or hit it? Had a 4Runner had to do that to the tail lights but connections seemed tight.

Ok, had to go out of town for work and I just got this taken care of.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Turns out you have to be very particular about where you place the probes for the multimeter in the fixture, and.... it was just a bad bulb

Anyway, I've been perusing the forums and I'm glad to have this resource for all issues big and small. Thanks again!
