Had a reman (denso) starter installed today. couldn't get the old one off myself (wow what a huge pain). but now at the end of start where the engine catches and the starter (is supposed to) disengage, there is a loud screech/squeal for a couple seconds. it's the same sound as when you try to start a car that's already running. tips/tricks/advice? Thanks.

Were there shims on the OEM starter?

I'm not sure about shims. I could barely see the thing.
it looks now like it only happens on cold starts. I did my first warm start today (twice now) and there was no noise.
I don't want to get a new one if I don't have to because it involves shipping this part back, getting a new one shipped out, etc (I didn't buy the part from the shop - I just went to them because I couldn't get the starter out).
My main concern is I don't want it to be chewing up the flywheel.

It's not a belt squeal by chance? Usually they go away on warm starts.

    My starter didn't have shims.

not sure - I've never heard it on my truck before this was installed. but it sounds exactly like when you start a car that's already running, and lasts for about 1 second, maybe 2.

Sounds like the small pinion gear is not retracting quick enough. which could be a poor rebuild,,wrong nose shim(to much pinion gear reach), starter is clocked wrong(if it is clockable) causing a bind.

And yes,,it will peel metal off of the ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate,,fix asap regardless.

Does it cold but not hot??,,loose starter.

Get it back to the shop, let them know you probably have a bad rebuild.

it seems to be 100% reproducible - happens on cold start, doesn't on warm start.
here is a video of a cold start. this is actually the best it has been so far. I spent 4 hours today trying to get the starter off but can't.
