Took a stab at adjusting my rear drums last night. The star wheel you click is to tighten I assume? I may have gotten them a little snug. There seems to be drag now and the drums are too hot to keep your fingers on for more than a second or two.

What are the risks of having tight drum brakes? How do you lessen the drag through the adjustment hole on the drums? What am I looking for as far as drag when adjusting?

Need help ASAP! Thanks in advance.

You need to get the back tire off ground to adjust properly. Sounds way to tight. Should be able to spin tire and barely hear pads contacting drum. Have to put truck in neutral' use flat screwdriver to adjust either direction. GL Also you will trash your drums in current adjusted position.

Thank you! I had the wheels off the ground but the truck was in park. Would that make much of a difference? With the tire off the ground I can get almost 1.5-2 full rotations of the tire if I spin it with all my strength.

Put it in neutral with the e-brake off. Then adjust as described...

Should spin without force. Also, your drums should never be that hot.

Ok I'll adjust them. When working over the top of the tire, with a screw driver in the adjustment hole, do you turn the wheel up towards your face or down to the ground. I saw an anti reverse lever that can be pride forward? Thanks got the help everyone.

Don't forget you have to hold the release over as well to back them off.

I heard somewhere on tacomas theres a certain numbers of clicks to bCk off after tightsning 'll thr way possible to center them etc. Anyone know what that is?or is it always a "feeling"type of game?? About to get my drums turned and put new shoes on myself but wanna find out the best way to do so before I take the chance...i feel like now one side is tighter then the other...if I pull ebrake while coasting say 10 mph one side seems to dip and the other doesnt...i also get shudders while braking unless i slam on the brakes...im wondering if they just need adjusted??? New truck with 10 thousand miles on it. Bought it aith 6000 miles and its bern an issie since day ome but dealer replaced drums and did leaf apring tab and said nothing else ...its just latelt ive realized maybe its all about the adjustment??? I also need to measure axle flange clearancd and make sure mine are in spec 107.94-108mm I believe on 3rd gens?? I know older models had that issue dunno if thr 2020a so but I'm gonna measure for peace of mind...another thing I want to do is grease the slip yoke since other members here and ford owners have said it fixed their thudding issues..... I gdt one clunk sometimes when going from 1st to second and I can feel the driveline bounce a little afterwards .the only other issue I have is the ahuddering or thudding when braking but when using ebrake at lower speeds they seem fine??? But then again when the ebrake comes on it feels like it has more power behind it??? I dunno..kind of thinking out load here but I also notoced when I bleed my brakes (yeah at 7000 miles ,new truck) i had a shit load of air in the front ...i did the old timers grease around the tube and bleeder to make sure no air went in so I know it wasnt from me ..im wondering id the 2020s may still have the master cylinder issues the older ones had?? But I dunno how to tell for sure??anyone know??? Somsthing about letting the pressure bleed off caused an issue??? If i tap the brakes first and then apply preassure harder then I feel I shoukd then I normally get a smoother and sometimes smooth as a babys ass stop...problem is pa weather changes its mind every 10 minutes and I sont have a garage so its tough to do thibg myself most of the year..but its getting niver out so maybe now I'll have time to check more out ..the dealership are usually so busy and rushing around that if u ask them to check somethibg, when u check out they say "ohhh I dunno hes busy right now" so if anyone has any thoughts on that back and fourth rant I just put out id appreciate it .thanks

I'm curious as to why you ask about 3rd gen brakes in a 7 year old thread in the 1st gen forum.
    Care to enlighten me?
