It's a 2wd Tacoma built on the same platform as the 4wd. The base model 2wd is a 5-lug 4 cylinder truck that sits lower and has different suspension than the 4wd and Prerunner models. A prerunner is a 2wd Tacoma that has the same suspension as the 4wd model.

Tradionally though, a prerunner is a truck that pre-runs a race before the actual race trucks.

    Thanks.

Another question: What does the ECT button do? This feature is not listed anywhere in the owners manual. Thanks.

LOL I had these same questions when I first started on this forum. ECT i think is electronically controlled transmission. It basically tells the tranny when to shift gears like if your towing a load or something. It supposedly tells the tranny to shift at higher rpms so you have more power. I also have a prerunner.

heavier susp. than a 2wd but I always thought the idea of riding the track in one was silly.
Why make a completely new truck line for 1 purpose rather than just drive the track in a stock 4wd?
Marketing ploy is all it really is as far as name. As far as a platform for the double cab....other countries did fine with 4 door HiLux's.

    Its in my manual....:notsure:

The ECT function changes the shift points under acceleration & throttle pressure, usually used for towing purposes, allows staying in a lower gear longer before upshifting like towing something or just going up a long incline, it'll run into the higher ranges of your powerband in the lower gear , helps keep the trans from overheating too
