I wouldnt do it 365 but over a day or two shouldnt matter. When we get snow i usually stay locked in so i can shift in/out as needed.

Why would you want to leave them locked all the time?

No reason to keep them locked, unless you are likely to need them locked during your drive, but to leave them locked all the time (all day, 365 days per year) will cause poorer gas mileage, and pre-mature wear on the CV axles, and front differential.

had a buddy with an '80 Chevy 4x4 who as soon as the first snow in winter would come he would lock the hubs in and run it all winter like that whether there was snow on the roads or not. It ended up toasting the front diff. on his truck. I know its not the same truck as a taco but same operation and alot beefier axle than what we have so I wouldn't recomend it. Now if your headin somewhere like say up in the hills where you feel you might need them locked I'd lock them so you don't gotta get out and do it when it gets nasty but I'd unlock them once back on the pavement.

I think the manual or the little card in the visor recommends locking the hubs and driving a mile(or ten?) once a month if you are not using four wheel drive regularly. Lock hubs, leave in 2HI. This is a '97 model I am referring to. All the time, no I would not do that. Locked hubs in 2HI the steering is slightly different, heavier I guess you would call it. Also as said by another poster drive train wear would likely increase with MPG likely going down. I just lock the hubs when I think I may end up needing four wheel drive.

Yep toyota recommends engaging transfer occasionally just to keep parts moving. Also recommend turning air cond. on occasionally in the off months! Got to keep the juices flowing.

Only talking about ten miles with just hubs locked in. Never considered mileage for such a short run. If in 4wd should be off road!

Not as much as you would think. There is a little extra drag with the hubs in but you're not driving the axle. I think I lost about 1 mpg. A good chunk of the winter I leave them in. I live in the country, when there's a foot of snow on the ground I'm usually am in 4wd until I hit pavement where they plow.

The biggest irritant to me is they make some noise at higher speeds.

Yeah I never noticed any drastic change in mpg either. 1-2 lost with hubs locked. Every now and then I can feel in performance and realize that they are still engaged.
