I've been constantly looking on craigslist for a decently priced Tacoma that is in good shape with the features I'd like. Anyway, I'm probably gonna go look at these two next week:

    http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/cto/4512015982.html

He claims there is little rust, except for on the hitch and around the bumper. He said he would come down to 8,700 instead of the 10k asking price.

    Then, there's this one: http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/cto/4441651864.html

It's from a dealer, even though it says owner. Emailed them, they claimed it was traded by an older man that kept very good care of it.

    Thanks for any help.

Better take good look at the frames coming from east coast. My rusty hitch area led to the end of my frame! Really check good in my opinion. Prices seem a little steep. Proof of maintenance would be a must! GL

Alright, guess I'll continue to look around. I'm pretty much set on the first Gen, as they seem much smaller than the newer ones. Anyway, thanks for the help.

    :)

I bought a similar 99 SR5 w the same stick, 4WD and V6 and 106k miles last year. It was always registered in Florida its entire lifetime. Turned out to be a NY state vehicle owned by a "Snow Bird" with a home in both locations.

The truck looked gorgeous, but underneath it was "Swiss Cheese". It failed the dealers inspection by 12 out of 14 points. Fortunately, Toyota bought it back.

Very hard to find the right one for a reasonable price. I now have a 04 with the same specs and 62k miles, but it took me 6 mos of daily searching to find it. I looked it over carefully and am satisfied it has minimal rust. I paid over $10k but I think its worth it. I am planning on lifting the bed and perhaps the whole cab to get at the rust. Don't want to deal with another buy-back.

    :)

Sounds like I all I really just need to do is wait it out, and when I find a good one for the right price, I need to jump on it.

Tell them to give you that older man's/previous owners phone number. If they go into the customer confidentiality thing,,then tell them you want a carfax or previous proof of service or damage work. If they bail on both,,tell them to have a good day.

Or if you have the carfax set up on your phone,,run the VIN to dig a bit deeper. The VIN should lead you to the previous owner even before you go in to talk again or before contact with the dealer/seller.

That's a huge drop going from 10 down to 87. You could work that down a bit more. If he's willing to drop down to 87,,he is damn sure willing to drop a bit more if you show $100 bills. Take $8k, with a $200 bumper in the back pocket type of thing.

Hey Adam! Don't be disappointed, we are just trying to give you good advice so you don't make the same mistakes some of us did. Definitely not something to jump into unless it has been meticulously kept. Ask for records of service, repairs, carfax, run vin also. But if you find THAT truck, that's when you jump on it. Just my opinion, but I buried one because of rust.#1 problem with east coast tacos.
