Hey guys I have a 99 pre runner that has been feeling really hesitant when coming from a stop and the gear shifting just doesn't seem right. The truck has 193k miles on it and i don't know if the fluid has ever been change. Should i even bother checking out the fluid or is it to late already? i know that generally if you mess with an old transmission it can just make the problems worse. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Take it to a transmission shop.

the only problem with taking to a transmission shop is that I'm not in the position to be paying a bunch of money to have a transmission shop charging me to check it out

Just drain and refill the transmission. No harm in that. The problem comes when people only maintain the transmission when something is wrong with it. Meaning they flush or change the fluid because its not shifting right and the trans craps out a little later, they then blame the maintenance but the problem was already there.

It wont hurt to drain and refill your transmission. It could even just be low of fluid. But it may not help anything either.

I will check the the color on the dipstick before i do anything tomorrow. I can post later if I need to put my plan was to just get some new fluid in there and change the filter nothing more. I was also thinking about checking the pan for metal shaving and all that stuff. I have no idea was is causing this stuttering issue and i don't know if its even trans related. I just know that doing some maintenance on this trans can't hurt.

Is the ATF level low? A drain and fill along with a new filer couldn't hurt ;)

I would suggest draining the fluid first and putting a new filter in, then see what it does. Dont flush the tranny, a flush always does more harm than good. You need to keep the particulates up in the valve body, especially with the number of miles that are on it. If that doesnt correct then you may have a shift solenoid going bad or a bad torque converter.
