    Hello all,

I wanted to reach to y'all to see if you could help me with a intermittent problem. I have a 2004 DC 4X4 with 112,000 and have had nothing but problems with it since i got it in April. I tripped a couple of codes awhile ago that seem to be EVAP codes (P0446 and P0442). I noticed that I was not getting a vacuum out of the gas tank, and would never get the suction sounds when I released the gas cap. So I replaced that with a new one. I canceled the light, but that did not help. Still do not getting the suction sound and the CEL light kicked back on. Do I have a leak in my system? Should I check some valves? Could it be the Charcoal canister? The other symptom that I have is a hesitation when I first accelerate from a stop. It only happens every once and a while. But I am starting to get concerned, because it seems to be getting worse. Basically, I push the gas pedal, nothing, press, press, press then finally it starts to accelerate. But then at the next light, it works fine. Could this be part of the CEL light? I just changed the Plug wires and gas filter... What else should I try...?

    Thanks so much.

Definitely related to the canister. Check for leaks, and split hoses. Thats something you can do. I think your canister might be under the vehicle, near the gas tank. (mine is under the hood).

Then check the electrical connectors going to the VSV's.

If you can't find anything obvious, you'll need to have a mechanic do a 'smoke' test to locate the possible leak.

Do I have to remove the bed to get to the Charcoal canister? So, you think the hesitation in the acceleration has something to do with the CEL?

    Thanks so much.

I have the same acceleration problem. No codes and no leaks that I know of. I changed the air and fuel filter and it went away for 1 full tank then came back. I read that others changed the spark plugs and wires and it helped. Ill be changing the plugs soon to see if itll help. People had also said that it may be the MAF.

I cleaned my MAF and changed the plug wires. Maybe I will change the plugs, see if that helps, but I can't help but thinking its related to the CEL and the emissions thing...

My canister was in the engine bay. In the service manuals there were instructions for testing each relay/silinode for that system. I went through all that, tested lines and two hours later, pulled the canister to discover a crack on the bottom side. I think a full assembly was just over $200 from camelback toyota.

    edit:
found a pic on the enterweb....

I think this is from an 03

I was hoping it was not the Charcoal canister, but looks like I should be checking there first. Mine is on top of the Gas tank, I would think that and 2003 and 2004 would be the same, but I guess not... I will check the CC tomorrow and see how it looks.

There are 3 VSVs on my 04. One by the canister and two near the battery. Check that they are working properly by applying voltage. I had a faulty one near the canister and had the 0446 code. $30 got me a used one at a junkyard.

Anyone have any idea if this would affect the drivability of the Truck? I have a 8 hour trip planned, and didn't know if this could shut off the truck or put it into limp mode. I expect the hesitation will remain, but just worried about it causing a major break down.

    Thanks again.

Your heasitation problem sounds like a bad throttle position sensor.

    Thanks Koditten,

I just did some reading on that, and it does sound like what I have. Although, it did not throw a code for it...
I will replace that tomorrow, is it up close to the firewall behind the Throttle body?
Anyone have a picture of it...?

    Thanks again.

OK, so I just went to the Dealer and they told me that for a 2003-2004 I had to order the whole throttle body, at a tune of 1300.00 to get the TPS.
He said you could get it for the 4 cy and the earlier 3.4 but they changed it for the 2003 and 2004 3.4. Has anyone out there replaced the TPS on their 03 or 04? And which one did you use.... I found a bunch on the internet, just dont know if it is the correct one.

    Thanks again.

Call Camelback Toyota in Phoenix, they are awesome and ship. Tell them you are on TW and want the Internet price. Best price from any dealer anywhere in the country.
