Getting ready to start gathering parts for the Tundra 231mm brake upgrade. I know the banjo bolt needs to be modified so it will clear the flare fitting on the calipers, but I'm wondering if anyone has had problems with the banjo fitting sealing properly against the caliper itself?
Looking at both the remanufactured 13WL & 13WG calipers for an '05 Tundra at NAPA, the surface around the hole is pretty rough since it's designed to take a flare fitting. Has anyone had to machine the surface, is there a different caliper out there that has a smoother surface, or does it just work fine as-is since it uses a copper washer? I'd hate to get this all put together and end up with a massive leak....

    13WL fitting:

13WG next to the stock caliper that is designed to use the banjo fitting. None of the surfaces were very smooth, IMO:

    Thanks for the help!

I have the same issue. How about using the Tundra Brake Hoses? Will they fit at the other end?

I had no issues. The copper is a soft metal and when you tighten it down the copper should form around the imperfections.

I have been running this mod for 6 years now and no leaks, no worries. But if you want piece of mind i do have a set off goodrich new in box stainless steel brake lines that i will sell you. No need to drill the banjo bolt out and would calm anyone's leak fears!

Get these ^. Tundra brakes with stock lines tend to be a bit squishy. Steal braided will keep your lines from expanding too much under heavy braking.

Have you done the brake upgrade?

The Tundra uses a hard line similar to what the 4Runners use- I investigated this option, but the Tacoma does not have the proper mounting points for the brake lines without fabbing something up.

I'm running the steel braided hoses from Toytec which use the banjo fittings. Will consider the Goodrich ones though.

I filied the rough surface down as best I could and it sealed up perfect on the drivers side. The pass. side I had to use 2 copper washers on the caliper and that stopped my leak.

Good to know... Sounds a little less than ideal. Someone mentioned that the '06 tundra calipers were machined, but that could be hearsay....

If you aren't running stock lines and already have braided steal lines, you probably dont have to drill the bolt down.

If Goodrich braided lines are going to be purchased, why not just order them with the flare fitting? I bring this up since it's what I'm hoping to do. I just don't know what exact fitting to order... :anonymous:

    :)

The Goodrich SS lines come with Tundra hardlines & mounting brackets. Guess I will go to the dealers and see what they cost.

I just did this install this past saturday on my 04. I used the 13WG calipers with steel braided brake hoses & banjo bolts from Wheelers off road with no issues.

I think it has to do with the angle of the banjo fitting:

    Read more here:

Of note, the calipers I used were not 100% compatible for some reason. I've never seen this issue before but the holes on the caliper for the bolt mounts were thinner and my bolts bottomed out and the calipers were still loose. I had to use a thick washer to tighten them down. Not a big deal but I think that was because I used Sequoia calipers which I heard were interchangable with Tundra's :notsure:

If you reuse the Tacoma caliper bolts, you will need to use a washer. You can eliminate the washer by ordering the Tundra caliper bolts. They are the same diameter and thread as the Tacoma caliper bolts, but are shorter.

    68dave -

Any chance you could post a photo of the Wheelers lines at the calipers? With banjos we still have the problem of seal at the copper crush ring against the rough casting.

I think they should be "spot faced" by a machine shop with a shorter banjo bolt. However, I will stop at the dealers to see how the Tundra fitment is before doing any machine work.

Been interested in this for awhile is this really worth the time and money and where is the best place to get the parts and what all is really needed to do the upgrade?
