Tranny won't go into any gear.

So I was getting gas and when I went to leave and shifted into drive, nothing happened. I put it into park and it made a grinding noise. It doesn't shift in any gear and it won't go into park. The tranny fluid was pink and full. Prior to that it was working fine, except right before I went to the gas station, the shift from reverse to drive was a little different, but didn't overly concern me because it wasn't drastically different. Any ideas? Has 212,000 on the clock.

 

Are you 4X4 ? The reason I ask is because sometimes on the older versions , people accidently put the transfer case shifter in neutral

Other than that it sounds like a broken planetary

How would bad gas make a transmission not engage into gear? Nope.

VERY possible explanation considering the grinding when going back into park. Sounds like possibly the parking pawl grinding while it tries to engage a free-spinning output shaft.

 

Yes, that would be illogical.
What is logical however, is that it is so out of the realm of possibility, it was a joke. Yep.

 

It is 4x4. I was thinking that maybe the tranny isn't bad because it didn't exhibit any noticeable warning signs, such as hard shifting or slippage. Gonna call my mechanic.

 

I'm a dummy. Transfer case was in neutral. Haha
