1996 Tacoma 4x2 with a 2.4L

    Mid-life crisis mod...will attempt to convert my 1996 Tacoma into a 4x4. My question with regard to the rear diff: want to install 5.29 gears with Arb airlocker
    $1,091 RD129 Air Locking Differential
    RD129. Stock diff. is 7.5". My question: will I need to upgrade the axle shafts to 30 spline? I think the ones currently in are 27 spline.

    OME 883 front, OMD 3.5" rear, Relentless front bumper, smittybilt 9.5K winch
    Your front suspension is completely different, you'll have to swap frames, put a solid axle under the front, or cut off your UCA and LCA mounts and add new ones where the pre-runner/4x4 mounts are.

    Yup, SAS in mind is the Allpro Rock Jock 60 Taco Supreme. I realize it's involving some serious bucks, but I've been preparing for this for some time. The good thing is it's all complete, the tranny is a W59, so I figure it's not too difficult 'cause the 3rz also has a W59. Modification here won't be overly expensive. I'm allocating approx. $13.5K Rear diff. locker is on it's way, and the Arb twin compressor is on it's way, should arrive Thursday.

    I have serious doubts about the 7.5" 5 lug axle holding up to this, but subbed for the results :popcorn:

    Question: Trying to decide where to mount the compressor? Thoughts and comments would be appreciated. "bout the only place I can figure is in the bed behind the drivers side.

    You might be able to fit it under the hood on the passenger side. Otherwise in the bed maybe in a tool box would be good.

    As mentioned before, I'm trying to convert my 4x2 into a 4x4...well, check out Mosk's posting on Yotatech titled 1995-2004 Tacoma A/T vs M/T ECU pinouts. As for me, it's a godsend. Hoping this information will make lightwork for others.

    Well, I finally finished installing the air compressor. Located in the taco bed. I added a 1 gallon tank so I can use pneumatic tools @ 120-150 psi. This will also engage the lockers. See pics in gallery. Additionally, got a 6-bolt rear end to replace the 5-bolt lug pattern.
