So I bought my truck very recently, and I finally got around to doing my first oil change. Check out what was waiting for me beneath the oil filter! In case you're wondering exactly what that is, it's a sandstone pebble about the size of my thumb!

I challenge anyone to come up with a plausible reason as to how and/or why this pebble might have ended up in there !

    Holy shit.

That is on purpose. Bet it was put in there to sabotage the engine. Previous owner.

That's exactly what I was thinking I did not want to be the one to bring it up though.

Maybe the previous owner forgot his good luck rock

    That's really a mystery though

Looks like you get to do some oil flushes.
How gritty was the oil that was drained?

The engine blocks are cast in sand and they sometimes don't get out all of the sand when they clean them prior to assembly. I've seen small pebbles, however that is rather large. I have no other explanation for you, sorry.

It probably fell out of a fram filter.

I'll tell you exactly how it got there.
It was stuck on the boss over the oil filter. When the filter was removed it was touched and fell into the recess. The person doing the job didn't wipe the surface of the oil seal so he never noticed it.
How do I know. It happened to me but I caught it by doing my checks.
Any filter at the angle and placement like this is prone to having things fall when disturbing the area.
    So what do I win ??????? :D

Gold star for you^^^^. It's awkward getting filter up threw everything. Could totally picture knocking a piece of debris on the way up or down with filter if in a hurry or just not paying attention. Hopefully for op that is all it was.
Edit: this was for Tacoma Mike.

It definitely looks like the filter media in a fram filter.

I am surprised that the filter would even seal with that boulder in there. Looks like it extends below o-ring seal!!

If you have the old filter cut it open and see if there's anything in there. Next oil change I would do a uoa. As long as the engine seems fine before this oil change I wouldn't worry.

You are an idiot. Fram's media isn't that fine.
