Anyone ever mod in gas lift springs for their hood on these first gens, and if so what brand? I'm looking to do so for my '97

That's one brand name, sure. Their website does not list Tacoma, so I'd have to figure which model would work.

I don't know of a brand that actually states its meant for our trucks, as most of the time Strong Arms, etc are sold as direct replacements for vehicles that utilize them for some reason (hatchback opening, hood props, rear glass windows that fold up). Best bet is to just get one that is between 9-15 inches and install it. I put one of them on my tilt trailer because it liked to untilt when I wasn't standing beside it holding it up. It wasn't a huge pain, but took a while. I bolted one end to the non-tilting part and then raised the trailer full tilt and bolted it there. Made sure it didn't fully jam up when I tilted it down and it was good to go.
