If you never owned a second gen, then the first gen is all you know. Simple! I've had a 79,86,94,96 and now 2010. The best truck was the 79! All it needed was a 4.0 in it and it would have been the best truck ever made.

True. Thought my third gen comment would have appropriately noted sarcasm.

Because they are older...I guess? Nah, the newer generation truck is better.

I'd rather have a Toyota pickup, than a tacoma. Regardless of first or second gen.

They both have advantages and disadvantages as everyone has stated but the 1st gen is the root and core of the Tacoma line. Obviously because it is a 1st gen but from 1995 to 2004 they made a truck that had impact around the world. It has proven it's self and drawn people to the Tacoma line. I remember that truck since I was a kid, I'm 25 now and I specifically bought a first gen because that is the truck I fell in love with.

Lol, because targeting the 5% of enthusiasts that prefer a compact truck and the 25% of those enthusiast that want a SAS truck to blow there wad on is a sound business strategy . I loved the first gen as a kid but I think the current generation does an astounding job of being a good truck for everyday joe while allowing for an extreme amount of customization for those of us that like to be different. I just hope they keep the smaller cab sizes around for the 3rd generation, in Canada we can't get the regular cab anymore which is really disappointing

That's why we each have opinions ;).

Toyota has the balls to do whatever they want. As long as it will make money. The new Supra is probably going to have a true gasoline electric drive where there is no direct connection between the engine and the wheels. Sounds ballsy enough to me, they even went to a manufacturer (BMW) that has more experience with performance electric systems to design it for them. If Toyota thought a SAS Tacoma would make money, they'd have one on the drawing board already.

That jeep truck has been on image boards for 2-3 years now and I've never seen a production model. Even if it gets to the showroom, the jeep is a terrible platform for a "truck" (bad for hauling loads, terrible mpg's for it's size, bad for doing everything but wheeling really) and I personally would never touch it. The more I've read about the jeep truck, the more it seems to be a Fiat truck with a jeep body over the top. Sounds like a great off road vehicle .

There's just no way to make profit right now on a vehicle as special purpose as a SFA Tacoma right now. Unless you came up with a whole new concept, jury rigging the Tacoma to have a SAS option isn't going to make money for Toyota. The engineering of having the two systems be factory interchangeable is a nightmare. That's why the Baja/TX aren't even built as Baja's. They get modified from stock TRD off road trucks because it's cheaper than building them as Baja's inside the plant. Let's face it, Toyota didn't design any of the Baja components, they waited for the aftermarket to do the work then copied it with an exact duplicate design and charge double the cost for it. That's the only way I could ever see Toyota having an SAS option. They'd wait for a large trusted aftermarket manufacturer to come up with a working design then slap it on some trucks for double the cost at dealership level.

Let's say just for argument Toyota did design a SFA setup for the Tacoma. Given the markup on a Baja over just doing it yourself, are you honestly willing to pay $60K to have your dream Tacoma right off the lot... If you are good for you but again 99.9% of Tacoma drivers aren't. The model won't sell enough to cover the development costs. I think it's more realistic we see another FJ type vehicle with an extreme off road design right from the get go.

IFS is by and large the preference for the car buying public. So they sell more, make more money, and that's pretty much the beginning and end of their concern. Jeep purists scream and cry at the thought of losing the solid front axle, but realities are what they are and 99% of jeeps will never see anything more than a light coating of dust on a paved road. So it may be a bad decision for someone who wants 40's and slickrock, but it's not one for a company looking to make a few billion a year.
