I had this problem with a '93 Acura Integra and it turned out to be the distributor cap. Mine would start once it cooled down for a while, but after driving for a while if I shut it off, it would not start up right away.

Not sure if this is your problem and I don't know much about 1st gens, but it sounded similar. Good luck!

Maybe someone will correct me (sorry to bring the Chevy world here), but how old is your starter/solenoid? Problem I had with my hotrod Chevy LUV with a V8 was that the starter solenoid got hot and wouldn't crank it til it cooled down.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
So it turns over but won't start?

Maybe a Coolant Temp Sensor or Cam Position Sensor.

Check engine wiring isn't pinched or burned around the EGR valve and you have good ground wire connections.

Check the EGR valve moves freely, too.

Replace dry or brittle vacuum lines.

Going through this also with mine, 95 2.7 l, I've found what is causing it, just haven't fixed it though,, on my particular problem, yours might be different, it's caused by not increasing fuel pressure for the said "hot start", mine is not doing the increase.
My pressure reg. is good, but my ecm is not turning on my vsv for the fuel pressure increase, so, I've either got a bad ground in this circuit or that part of my ecm is not working,,, I can jump the vsv to turn it "on" and it will start.

OP, is it a crank no start, no crank, or sluggish crank no start?

I had a 67 Cougar with a 390 back in the day, was run the hell out of by all my friends and me. The same symptoms occurred when the last head job was done, and the rings went to toast. Seemed to start fine when cold, yet if it was any kinda warm it would not start for it's life.

I think we should have to pay the average price per gallon of the year our vehicle was built. I'd drive my car a lot more if I was only paint 18 cents per gallon.
