    Now I'm wishing I'd have started a new thread with this . . .

I haven't dug into this yet, and I'll read all the things posted before I do, but I have another couple of possibly relevant data points.

First, it is quite easy to shift into first if the truck is rolling at all. So, as I slow down approaching a red light I can shift into neutral and let the clutch out. Then, going as slow as 1 mph if I depress the clutch pedal it will slide right into first. If, instead, I wait until I'm completely stopped then clutch/shift into first it's hard.

Second, if while stopped at that light I depress the clutch and shift into second, then first, the shift into first is easier than it would have been had I just gone strait for first.

Thank you for the help, and sorry for all the dumb question. My knowledge of how my clutch works is largely theoretical. I'm not afraid to take it apart, but time is somewhat limited, so I'd like to have my best chance possible at starting close to the problem.

I get the principle of the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing, but the last time I actually had my hands on any of those was when I was 12 helping my dad change the clutch in his Datsun 510 wagon. Other things I've read on here, like pilot bearing and another that I can't recall are new terms to me entirely. Is there a diagram and/ "Manual Transmissions 101" that I can review?

That's a fantastic writeup. Thanks for the link.

Shifter - that's the stick I grab to change gears? Or is the shifter something that the stick attaches to?

That is not surprising basically you are "double clutching" by shifting to neutral you are bring the trans gears up to engine speed and that matches the road speed.

    Correct.

At the bottom of the shifter shaft there is a socket. That socket seats into a shifter bushing.

If either of those are worn out or broken, shifting is sloppy.

The link to the Marlin Crawler website I provided on the first page of this thread has both the socket and bushing for sale. Much higher quality than OEM.

I'm hoping that the Marlin Crawler ones are awesome, but don't order them if you are in a hurry to get your problem fixed.

I ordered on the 16th, the parts didn't get picked up by Fedex until the 20th, and the tracking says they won't get here until the 31st. 15 days seems crazy slow for items that should fit in a first class mail envelope that could have been here already for less than $2. Especially frustrating since I paid almost $9 for USPS parcel post, then got shipped to by Fedex (who I try never to use if possible).

So be aware of that before you order.

I adjusted the clutch pedal a little bit, and I think it's better. The hitch into second seems to be gone, but my test drive was short.

The bushing - getting that thing is like peeling an onion. I took the trim piece off, but the pleather dust boot is attached to the shifter. How do you get it clear off and out of the way?

Then I took the four screws out of the metal frame and lifted it up (as far as the trim piece).

Then there's another damn dust boot. I peeled that off and up. But I can't see a bushing. Where the hell is that thing?

the bushing is underneath the shifter. you have to remove a ring. Push down and turn counterclockwise on the ring and it will come up. you will then see the seat where the bushing goes. most likely it will be disintegrated.

I bought the bushing and the seat from Marlin Crawler, and have both of them in place. However, I have fouled something up. I can't get the shifter back in.

From the bottom up there's a ball with the bushing on it, shaft, then half a ball attached to the shaft with slots in it that I'm guessing slide over the pins. I can't get the shaft far enough down to get the half-ball over the pins. Pictures attached. Help will be appreciated.

Ok, I've got it back together. Getting the shifter down took a fair amount of wiggling. Then I couldn't get the collar on.

It turns out the new seat is thicker than the old one, which prevented the shifter from going down far enough to allow the tabs in the collar over the pins.

So, new bushing, old seat. Old problem still exists.

Today, without the Friday night pressure of "Hurry up! We have to go to the football game!", I did an on-site modification of the shifter seat and got it to fit. I also moved the driver's seat forward one notch to help make sure I get the clutch pedal fully depressed. Finally, I washed the truck, but I doubt that will have any curative effects.

I think it might be ok, but I'm fairly certain that I'm hypersensitive to it right now. So, I'm just going to drive it for a while.

Thank you, everyone, for your help. The collective knowledge saves me money on a regular basis.
