I need to replace key switch on 99 column shift 2wd sr5, its the one that's in the dash by the gages, you can tell the innerds are gone because its even hard to get the key to go in sometimes because the tumblers are worn out. I know its not the key that's bad because it works fine in doors, airbag, and gas door and in those it goes in and out smooth like butter but it "binds" going into the tumblers on the ignition then every now and then (one out of 5) it works smooth and easy.

I tried dry graphite and even oil then a dab of grease but nothing helps it so its not just needing to be "lubed".

I tested my keys on other Toyotas and they go in and out like butter but mine must use effort to go in and giggle for a while to get it to finally turn on

can anyone tell me if they ever replaced the key switch on column shifter and hints or tips on the best easiest way to do it, things not to do

also is OEM worth the extra $$$ or is it ok to just get a generic replacement and save money if there isn't much difference in quality?

    thanks

found this video to remove the key lock from the dash if anyone needs to do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0CRdsFtWdQ

I just realized if im going to buy a new switch then have a locksmith rekey it to my key then I should just take the old key lock to him and let him replace all the tumblers and springs new again and then my old switch will be a new one

don't know why this idea didn't register before now  guess im getting old and senile lol

Put the key in and turn it to the ACC position but dont start the engine. There should be a hole through the plastic just below it where you can put a small philips screwdriver in or an ice pick and push the little button which should allow you to slide out the whole ignition cylinder.

yep, easy peasy just like the video shows it done. the only difference is the lock tab for the lighted ring has a screw holding it on but otherwise its the same.

I just decided to buy a new cylinder lock and let the locksmith rekey that one, the old one felt too weak and sloppy so I didn't want to trust that it would feel like new after he fixed it (or even if he could fix it).

I can tell by the pictures that it is different because the body is shorter then mine, mine has the same spasce behind the black thingy that it hass in front of it so yours is at least 1/4" shorter then mine

I think its different for 2nd gen, the numbers don't match so something is different, my ignition shows it fits only 98-00 years for my part number

plus for some odd reason the floor shift is different then the column shift part numbers, maybe its the steering lock that makes the size difference?

I don't think I can do it but I am very tempted to buy it just for the tumblers and factory key set. but that would mean I still need to get my cylinder fixed and put your keyways in it to use those keys then I have to take the doors apart and hope the door locks match or if not I have to redo them plus to go this route means I have to disable the airbag and gas door lock keyways so they don't need keys. that's a ton of work just to get factory keys.

The lock cylinder set for my daughter's 99 was like $150 shipped from one of the online dealers, I just don't recall which one at the moment.

I thought of having my rekeyed when they stole my backpack and it was more expensive than buying the factory cylinder set.

local locksmith said he could rekey it for me for about $65 if it was fixable or if I brought in a new one for him to make work with my key.

last price I saw for a complete Toyota lock set for everything was $250 and an aftermarket brand was $210 and something that looked cheap like it was made in china was $195

no, those are just the ignition cylinder lock and the keys, they call it a set because the keys make it more then one item in the box lol

the first one is my cylinder lock part number and I got one locally for $80 at NAPA but its not OEM, the $200 one I think is the one for cars with chipped keys
