    Hi folks,
I am new to the forum. Mainly 'cause I just recently bought a 1999 Tacoma SR5 4x4. I absolutely LOVE this truck. However; it has recently been making a high pitch whine randomly but, often. Doesn't matter what speed, if I am accelerating, or have the clutch engaged. To me, it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine, near the fan pulley. I can't seem to use a stethescope on the fan pulley for some reason. duh. That is the area that it seems to be coming from but, it is very hard to deduce.

Has anyone had the same issue? Do you have a solution?(other than earplugs, turning up the stereo, etc...)
    Many thanks!
    Steve

I have this issue too. More of a rattling or a bearing going bad kind of sound with mine. It could be your fan pulley bracket. that's what people thought mine was but isn't. The way to check that is to take off each belt one at a time and run the engine for a few seconds after taking each one off. I took all mine off and the noise was still there so it wasn't the bracket or any pulleys or anything that the belts turn. So I'm assuming it's the water pump or perhaps something with the timing like a pulley inside there. They sell a kit that comes with everything to replace for the timing belt/water pump and runs around $300. Still have not got around to doing mine.
I posted a thread with videos too, check em out and see if it sounds similar to yours. I'm curious.

Yep taking off your belts will diagnose this if it's any of those components. Unless it's a pulley for the timing belt, or water pump.

Nice. Wish mine was that easy. I'm dreading doing this timing belt water pump kit for mine and hoping that's actually the problem. If not I'm screwed because that means it's something else internal. Guess I'll have to take it to the dealer and get it diagnosed if not. Wish me luck:)
