No shops will 'patch' it because it's in the hazard range or whatever they call it. But yeah u can 'plug' it. Have done it many times even ones on the very outside and still held up. Technically plugs are meant to be temporary though. It'll work. But keep in mind you'll always be at a little more risk of a blowout. I've never experienced a blowout myself and have used many plugs and driven on them for months. But drove a little more careful than I normally do just in case.

I used to do a lot of construction and got a nail in my tires about once a week. I've had good results with those "yarn" type plugs and had tires run for 50,000 miles on some of them. However, unless it's a nail in the tread area itself you shouldn't attempt a patch. I don't think that anything will patch a broadhead hole on a highway tire no matter where it is. I once ran over a piece of metal at a campground that put a cut about the same size at the edge of my tread and no tire shop I took the tire to would even touch it. You might remove the tire and try a flat patch but the chance of a blowout is great. I'd not use the tire for anything but a utility trailer or on something like a one-way.

yep plug it with the tar cord type plugs and if it leaks too much but an inner tube in the tire because its a farm truck. tubes aren't good for high speed road use but you aren't doing that with it.

if you know a regular gas station tire guy tell him to break it down patch it for you from the inside and you agree its all on you and he never fixed it if it blows out or the patch doesn't hold, those tire outlet stores wont do it but joe shmo at the local fix-a-flat station will do it for ya if you agree up front he isn't responsible for it.

sure, tires used to all have tubes in them in the past, they just don't balance well at high speeds so that's why they stopped using them today.
