Considering the pre 2nd gen boxes are more narrow than 2nd gen it will fit that much better.

    Bright plated.

EDIT: reviewed their site on-line and don't see the slimline mid-size wedge box in black. Based on how mine fits my 2nd GEN, you'll need the wedge shape and 12.5" to 13" front to back dimension to avoid conflict with the wheel wells. That black box (for $198 not $400???) at Wally World might be the best deal if you don't want to rattle can it.

A little digging, I think the Kobalt box is made by Better Built. The dimensions are the same

The toolbox I have (the Kobalt one from Lowe's...very popular on the site here), will in fact fit into a 1st generation Tacoma.

    ^ This

My toolbox says "Kobalt" on it but it came with a Better Built sticker, same box, same company, different branding. Idk why they're trying to switch it over.

Or is Wal Mart / Lowes the best place to get one?

Bluetooth OBDII module.
I can second the Kobalt from Lowe's. I got the slimline because I wanted to conserve space in the already small bed. It's really lightweight and almost flimsy, but will hold several sets of tools with no problems so far.

I don't have a double cab but I love my slim line:

Holds my CB antenna, high lift, shovel on the outside and have it stuffed with tons of tools and recovery equipment on the inside.

I ended up getting the Lowe's (Better Built) low profile slim. I got it on black Friday for 90 bucks. It holds all my forestry paint, ribbon, chainsaw helmet, shit tickets, chainsaw, hitch, and tow strap.I had to adjust the striker and latch a bit and it does open a little hard from the driver's side. I like it though, especially for the price!

I wish there was one like the bak box for the second gen. Or something that sits flush with the top of the bed in between the bed instead of on top.
