Can't see where it snapped. Everything initially looks normal except for a lot of belt wear.

is there a crack in the pulley on the left side? I think I see something that looks like it might be a crack but everything else looks normal so what are you trying to show in the picture? when you said it snapped right off we expect to see something missing from the picture lol.

Well if you look where the belt is twisted out on the left, the lower Idler Pulley broke off it's metal and is laying sideways. the thing sitting right behind the twisted belt in the Pic. There is metal spinnin around freely where it broke off the holding bolt from the Pics I've seen in the parts manual. I was lucky I heard some kinda rattlin while I was fixin to go on a 70 mile round trip to BBQ in Lockhart. Thought it was the AC , but I started putting my hand around and the massive rattle was behind the Timing Belt cover, and that is a brand new belt only 4 months old. Thanks Stealership, I'll do it myself from now on.

Dang man. As much as it hurts to take it back to that dealer again I would say that is where you are headed to have them fix it. Not to be to picky but you have a belt not a chain like the title. I know you fixed it later on in your last post.

The top idler pully is good, the bottom idler pully is laying on it's side.

ahh ok, still not easy to see but i do see it

damn the bad luck, i bet the bearings cam apart in it and it tore itself off the shaft

first picture in post #10, that shiny thing under the belt is the edge of the pulley and the rest is under it and that's what is holding the belt twisted in that position, the belt is on top of most of it and you can just see the open bearing end of it sticking out the left side of the belt

I see it now. I will say this though, you cry out "Thanks stealership", but we don't know the whole story. Do you know for a FACT that the dealership made a mistake? Maybe the part that was installed had a fracture that was missed since it was a new part and it broke? Not saying that the dealership DIDN'T make a mistake, because we don't know the whole story, but just saying, before you go bashing a dealership, can you prove that it was their fault?

I will say that I do not see anything wrong with the center, top idler pulley though.

I do not believe the Stealership did anything to the lower Idler pulley. it's most likely original. I circled the top idler to show the difference. I'm just lucky as hell that with my bad hearing I could hear the rattle before it let go on a lonely stretch of Hwy. But I also believe that after 2 major screw-ups with those people that I was pissed that this would happen only after 4 months of a complete timing belt service (water pump, tensioner and seals) that maybe they should have caught it. I was just pissed that it's sitting until I get the parts and try my hand at it. I will need the lower Idler, a new belt and a gasket for the lower cover. Just another thing I really did not need at this time having never done this before. I'll get hot when the radiator shows up, as I'll have to remove that also to get at it. The Beast also has 220 K on it now.

OK. Well the pulley that is broken there IS the tensioner pulley. I won't say either way if it was a defective part, or bad workmanship until I could see it with the lower cover off. Either the new tensioner was defective, or the installer did not tighten the nut and it fell off. One of the two. So until we see more, it would be hard to tell.

So you are suggesting that it IS something the Dealership should fix for free????? If that IS the tensioner that they replaced, it should be? If so I'll make them tow it in and same some Ducketts!

It might be worth a tow job to the dealership.

I would say that if they did a timing belt, and the belt came off with a broke loose pulley that THEY installed, then yes, it should be fixed for free from them. I will say that they MAY ask you to pay for the tow, and then reimburse you if they cause of the failure is them. And that is just normal business sense.

Make sure to update this as things progress so that we can find out what happened, and the end result.

    Update:
The Service Mgr. got involved from the Git-Go. He gave me the number for the Towing Co. , And they picked it up around Noon Yesterday. Called them this am and it was ready. They replaced the Timing Belt, tensioner pulley, Gasket and Anti-freeze. Total Cost to me....ZERO. The only thing is the wire attachment clip to the Upper timing cover was eaten off by the belt, and they are looking for a replacement. Sounds good to me. He also told me that Toyota guarantees those parts for 12 months, so it's on Toyota's dime. Thanks Bill, would never known to let them have it back.
