I have a 2011 access cab 4 cyl 5 speed and am wanting a double cab with a V6. I am pretty dead set on a second gen, but am eyeing the first gen double cabs too and I found one for dirt cheap, either the owner doesn't know what she has or there is something terribly wrong with it.

How are the 3.4's power wise compared to my 2.7? How well do the automatic transmissions hold up in these? I need the 4 doors to haul dogs and am tired of shifting gears so an automatic is a must. Here is the Tacoma in question, I really love these old bodies compared to the new ones and the smaller size would be nice!

    Thanks, guys! :D

Dude, that can't be a real price, but look into that. Low mileage 3.4 TRD is golden.

3.4 5VZ FE is solid as hell.

If that were near me, I'd be looking into it. If the price is anywhere between 12 and 15...

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna check it out, it looks beautiful! I love the color too as my access cab is silver as well. Would be nice to get this, turn around and sell my 2011 for 20k and have 18k left over to add some mods to this! :D

There is no way that truck in the pic is selling for that price. Something is fishy.

What years were the first gen double cabs produced? Wasn't for only like 3 years or something?

What is the power of the 3.4 like? Will it move down the road pretty good? I don't want it to be a hot rod, but when I go to pass a truck I would like it to have the snap to get around it in a hurry. One of my biggest complaints about the 4 banger is passing is sketchy with it.

I have a 3.4 and the wife has the 2.7. She claims her truck is faster, i just think it is noisier. You stand on the 3.4 and you will move quite nicely in these light trucks.

My 3rd truck is 5.7 tundra, the 3.4 is no where near as fast as the tundra, but its not bad enough for me not to drive the 3.4.

The 3.4 was rated for a top output of around 180 hp.

I missed my 3.4, gen 1 so much after I got the tundra, i set out to get another one. It is my favorite vehicle.

Yeah, the V6 in these things seem to be pretty peppy for what they are. The 4.0 in the 2nd gens is impressive compared to the 4 cyl. But, considering how much lighter the first gens are I'm sure the 3.4 moves them quite nicely like you said. Just as long as I have passing power I really don't care. If I can hang doing 75-80 on the interstate I will be happy.

The autos come with power ECT, pretty much power mode/turbo mode whatever you want to call it. Best used for towing, passing, and accelerating onto the highway.
The 3.4 is near bulletproof. I don't have any problems getting up to 80 in my DC, same setup as this truck except I'm sure mine weighs a tad more.

Power ect just holds rpms higher haha that's it.

I ha e a 03 double cab. It's awesome. Moves plenty good down the interstate.

Now, if you're planning on 18k in mods with it and puttin skids and armor and all. You're fucked. The auto will shift a lot. You'll have to regear and even think about boosting it if you make a pig on 33s or something.

That said the 3.4 is an awesome motor. Both mine have it. It is more fun with a manual but that's just me.

Double cabs were only made 01-04. Only came with auto trannies too.

Hey Monte what's up? We went to school together at Northwest, remember me? I didn't know you added another Tacoma to your collection! Very nice!

But yeah, I don't plan to go nuts on modding it, just a heavy duty bumper and wheels and tires probably. This will be my daily driver so I can't go nuts on it.

Moves ya a lot quicker does it not?

He's worried about passing and readily having that oomph there. Without question the 3.4 will get you there, easily holding your rpms higher with a button makes it all the better.

Google the phone number in that ad. That person has several cars for "sale", all over the web, all for the exact same price.

It wouldn't surprise me that its a scam...

I have a 'free' ad on cars.com - selling our corvette.... My husbands phone number is listed there (I wish we could've deleted his phone number). He's been getting text messages that are suspicious looking. He's ignored them...

So yea....be careful of the scams on cars.com

To be fair, while there are thousands of scams out there, a reverse lookup of that phone number shows that it IS located in the area that the Tacoma is, and is listed as a business phone number. They show 5 different vehicles for sale at that number, so this leads me to believe it is possibly a used car dealership. (Again, not saying it IS, just a possibility) So why such a low price? Well it could have a salvaged title, which would mean the value WOULD be extremely low. It may have underlying issues such as a lot of rust on the frame, and perhaps Toyota denied a frame replacement, thus this would give it a much lower price as well. The thing to do is call the number and ask questions. Things I would ask would be:

    • Do you have a CLEAR title in hand?
    • I want a photo of the title please. (Tell them your bank requires this to approve a loan)
    • May I have the VIN to do a Carfax? (even if they offer to do it for you, ask for the ENTIRE VIN, then you can look up yourself)
    • Does it have rusting of the frame? Photos please.
Anyone that is scamming you would have a hard time getting ALL of this information to you.

The fact that the price is non-believable.

The fact that it says "base" (assuming model) in the title yet it has leather and power everything....

Remember though, if it has a salvaged title, then the price is actually reasonable. I have bought many vehicles because people thought the price was too good to be true. Just do good research on it. If there is nothing wrong with the title, then it would raise a red flag for sure, but hey, if they have a title, and I can walk in, and pay that price for it and drive off in it, I'm going to do it. Just don't fall for the "Send me money by PayPal and my buddies will get it shipped to you because I am stationed overseas right now" bull crap. THAT is the most common fraud. They make you think "Oh, this guy is military, so he has to be legit!"
