I bought a 2000 tacoma 3.4 manual a few months ago. This is my first experience with a tacoma and with a manual trans. Pulling hills on the freeway I usually leave it in fifth gear which doing 70 to 75 has the Rpm between 2600 and 2800, if I can maintain this speed in fifth but can't really accelerate should I just downshift? I'm worried about lugging the engine excessively. Is this high of rpm enough to keep adequate oil pressure for the load on the engine?

If it's holding speed, you're fine. Downshifting won't hurt, but isn't necessary. You aren't lugging the engine at that RPM.

Anything above idle is enough oil pressure.

well you have a lift too correct? and bigger tires? if so, you're just feeling all of that take it's load. downshifting is perfectly fine so long as you're not skipping gears or dropping to a redline.

It has multiple gears for a reason so don't be afraid to use them. :)

If applying more throttle doesn't get you more speed, then you need to downshift.

i meant dropping into a redline, not accelerating into a redline.
