a lot of what I read about the K&N kits are the filters are crap and let a lot of dust through them dirtying up your sensors so I would not buy it.

get a different kit with a better filter brand then K&N that will actually keep your engine clean like a filter should.

im not educated enough about it to recommend anything but I know when I was reading about getting a &N filter for my truck, the overall concensus was they are not something you want to use.

do a search on the forum and you will find educated recommendations for "good" air filters to use, I just decided to keep my stock filter for now because those filters are pricey

its well worth reading through this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/9141-air-filter-do-you-use.html

and remember there are always opposing opinions on everything so read a lot of it and decide for yourself, just stay away from oiled filters and be sure whatever you use is a dry type filter, the oiled filters messes up and in some cases can ruin the MAF sensors

aftermarket "cloth" filters let more air through and ultimately let more particles through. K&N's have a little more gap IIRC which is why they get a bad rap. I'm using a drop in right now and will be doing deckplate soon. got rid of the FIPK because it was too loud for my taste and didn't improve anything

Same here. I'm running a drop in K&N with the stock airbox and no other mods. Haven't had any issues for 126,000 miles. I think there is something different about the cone shaped high flow filters as they seem to have been causing the most problems with the masses. It could also be operator error.

I've been running a K&N filter in the stock airbox since 2007. I've only cleaned and oiled it once and never had any issues. I check it every year but unless its filthy I leave it alone.

I don't fully understand the whole deck plate mod. Look at how many leaves and dirt end up in your air box with out having a big hole in it. With the K&N intake system you also get a tube that restricts your air flow less.

Years ago reading about K&N filters it seemed a lot of people who were having problems with them cleaned them too much and/or over oiled them.

ETA: You could always get a prefilter too if you wanted.

KN drop in since almost day one on this truck. KN packaged oil is junk. PJ1 products(since day 1) for cleaning and re-oiling. They make a specific aerosol oil for high flow K&N style filters that goes on nice and thin. And there cleaner for the same can clean the filter just as well with cold water,,as warm. Paper filter will be more efficient at removing particles,,KN is aftermarket performance at higher flow,,when treated properly.

Plenty of haters of K&N,,but it is a proven aftermarket gain,,when treated properly. Have ran a K&N for many years on all types of vehicles,,and not once did they shudder to the side of the road due to the filter or have a sandblasted intake when pulled down. I am fairly certain a few vehicles have pulled across the finish at the Baja 1000 with a K&N in place,,from first to last place.

Stay away from the tube kits,,they can do more harm than good in some cases. Seen more reports of declines in vehicle performance, than gains and they are annoyingly noisy on some apps. If you want to try one,,just do the drop in with no mods.

i get that people like to mod their vehicles but with all the info disproving any kind of gains from these filters i don't understand why people want them? a hint of throttle response and a little extra sound isn't worth sending dust into places it's not supposed to be.

lol. the sarcasm scattered in this response is spot on. even more amusing tho is that the things you make fun of are what drivers accept word for word because the flashy text on the k&n box says 12-25 hp increases can be gained!!!!

I didn't buy it for the horsepower gains, I bought it so I wouldn't have to buy another one. But you're right, some people go for that sort of thing. Kind of like cutting holes in your airbox...:stirthepot:

Thought I'd share that I'm running a Volant kit. But I have purchased the Donaldson power core air filter instead of using the oiled. I'll never go back to oiled. K & N is fine, as long as you are ok with cleaning the filter a lot. And cleaning your MAF a lot. For $100, I would try it out. And if you don't like it, or it doesn't work, resell it. Then get yourself a proper kit.
Is the kit for sale an aluminum polished tube or the poly tube?

Edit: Or get that kit, and purchase a Donaldson filter and throw it on there like I did with mine. They're kinda expensive, like $100, but I got mine on sale. Black Friday would be great to buy one. Then you'll have an awesome kit for like ~$175
