Linear clutch pedal return spring pictures?

    Anyone have an excellent picture of the firewall mount for the top end of the linear spring? Have a spring in hand that I've been meaning to instal but every time I look up under there I don't see anything that looks like the pictures I've seen.

    That's a hard place to take pictures.

    I didn't attach either end of mine to the firewall, though.

    One end gets attached to the pedal. I hooked the spring around the pin that goes through the pedal and the attachment at the end end of the rod that goes to the master cylinder.

    The other end took me a few times to get right. There's a wire bundle that obscures the view of the tab that I attached to. Under the dash above the driver's knees running left to right is a metal tube, or pipe. On the forward facing side of it there is, hidden by the wires, a tab sticking 90* off of the pipe. You can feel it, but not see it. This tab has a hole in it that you can put the other end of the spring through.

    I used a brake pedal return spring that I got from the dealer, but I shortened mine up a little bit by cutting off the "hook" on on end and bending a new one. I found that the original length was just a little too long and I would sometimes lose the cruise control going over bumps in the road.

    Like mw said. It doesn't really attach to the fire wall it attaches to the tube up behind the dash. So its pulling the pedal out towards the driver.
    I don't recall having any difficulty locating the tab to install the spring, just lay down under there with a light and youll see it.

    I used a hardware store spring, that I had to stretch pretty far to get it hooked. Also I stuffed a piece of foam inside of the spring to quite the "boiing" sound of the spring.

    This is the best I can do for ya.

    There's a tab behind the lower dash panel that the spring connects to on one end. The other end connects to the outside of the clevis where the cotter pin goes through.

    This is on my 98, YMMV.

    Those are good pictures. I've never seen that tab - only felt it. As I said, I've got a wire bundle running across in front of it.

    Well, I found the tab...

    Then found out I have the wrong spring. Catches on the lip of the clutch pedal assembly. Everything works, just an annoying sound when I depress and release as the spring scrapes the lip. Found the right part number (9050714030) and hoping the local dealership has them in stock or can get one in the next day or so. Annoying sounds annoy me.

    Other than that, went smooth. I found the tab by feel. Pried the torsional spring out with a pry bar. The new spring is easily installed by hand. Fixed the retainer spring clip that a Toyota mechanic didn't install correctly. This fixed my sloppy pedal and had me thinking about leaving the torsional spring in. Then I recalled, not so fondly, the creeeeaaaak that comes on cold rainy days.

    As expected, the pedal pressure is different. There isn't that lessening of the pressure once you get past the spring pivot point (as there is no more torsional spring to pivot). The nice thing is that it is noticeably quieter, even on a dry, fairly warm day.

    After digging around, there seems to be several part numbers floating around.

    The one that Madjik_Man has used is 9090507020. I ordered that part number but the spring I received does not look like the one he shows in pictures, with the longest hook being shorter than what he shows. This is why it is rubbing on the lip of the brace on the clutch pedal assembly.

    I'm going to order the brake pedal return spring that is listed as part number 9090507028 as well as the 4 cyl clutch return spring (9050714030) and see which one works better.

    know this thread is slightly dead but does anyone know how to remove the torsion spring? thing sounds like i'm stepping on squirrels whenever i shift. was planning on just replacing it with a linear spring.

    definitely wear safety glasses. My torsion spring was under a lot of load and shot out of the bracket like a bat out of hell.

    You can also remove and forget the springs and run without them. That's what I did 30k miles ago and have had no problems.

    The only problem you might have doing this is the pedal might not come up high enough to hit the cruise control cut off switch making your cruise control not work.

    90905-07020 (1998-2000 and 2004 with VSC) and 90905-07028 (2001-2003 and 2004 without VSC) are intended for the brake pedal return.

    I would recommend using 90507-14030, which intended for the clutch pedal.

    They all work just fine. Even a generic spring from the hardware store will work as long as it’s the right length.

    Absolutely, my post was in reference to had people having fitment issues with the springs recommended.

    People can order whatever spring they like, there's lots of springs and lots of places to get springs, but if you're ordering one from Toyota, you might as well order the one meant for the application.
