Why isn't the 2001-2004 double cab optional with a manual transmission?

Never understood why, they had an awesome 5 speed for the extracabs and the second gen double cabs have manuals in em. Why didn't the first gen double cab have a stick option? Seems odd to me why they wouldn't. Toyota should have kept using that same 5 speed when they switched over to the 2nd gens.

I don't know either, but it pisses me off...thinking it was an attempt at making the truck seem "uppity". I would like my truck 1000x better if it was.

I am actually glad mine is an automatic, it just got my curiosity going. I don't want a manual for a daily driver though, had enough shifting. I sold my 2011 to get away from that haha.

I've heard that they do exist, but are super hard to find. I've also seen ONE picture of a 01-04 double cab long bed somewhere. Also have read DC were produced with 4 cylinders in super low quantities.

Dunno, but I wish it was an option so I don't have to spend the time/money swapping mine.

The double cab 1st Gen was not available in a MT from the factory. They were geared towards soccer moms and family vehicles and sold like hotcakes. Dealerships didn't budge on pricing for them. I wanted a dcab but chose the extra cab because I wanted the MT more.

Those that want an MT are rare individuals who want more of the driving experience. Somewhere I read MTs only account for some 6% of sales these days.

If they exist, someone did some work or it was a special build.

Curious, why did you dump your '11, was it just cause of the manual? Assuming you replaced it with your double cab?

Wish mine would have one. A lot of car thefts in my area and not one of them know how to drive a stick (including myself lol). Plus I'd get better MPGs and something to do while driving. However, I do love the extra 2 cupholders :p

Do you have that pic handy? I would love to see that. Never heard of a 4 cylinder or a manual, if someone has one they probably swapped it. Wouldn't be a hard swap to do if you really wanted one. Lots of my Powerstroke buddies have swapped theres from autos to sticks, takes time and determination, but it can be done in about 5 hours with one of those trucks with the right tools and a guy that knows what he's doing.

I see tons of 4 banger DCs in my area. Didn't think they were uncommon. I have seen one guy with a manual DC.

Feel sorry for them, those gotta be slow as hell. 4 bangers only belong in regular cabs, double and access cabs are too heavy for them, those ones need a v6. Especially a 4 banger with an automatic behind it, slug.

It's actually not that bad. It comes with 4.56 gears. The only area where they suffer is going against a strong headwind on the interstate. I test drove a 4Runner with the 3.4L and off the line I couldn't tell a difference.

I always hated that with my 4 banger, that and hills, sometimes had to drop all the way down into 3rd gear on some doing 45 or less the whole way up. Hopefully won't have that problem with my 3.4!
