I looked at the 1st gens before I got my 08. I love the size of the 1st gens but the smoothness and power of the 08 is great.
I'd say its a tossup.

I sold my 2003 Xtrcab Prerunner with 162,000 miles for my 2009 TRD DC. When I sold my 2003 it ran as good as the day I drove it off the showroom floor!!!!!!!!!!! Never had ONE single issue with it!!!!
I love the way my 2009 looks, but the drive and response is nowhere close to my 2003!!! I voted 1st Gen!!!!

Honestly, I never liked the original 1st gen Tacoma's ('95 1/2-'00). That's why I kept my original Toyota Pickup ('92) for so long. When the '01s came out, I loved the new body styling and wanted one right away. I bought my '01 DoubleCab 4 years ago and love it. I do really like the 2nd gen Tacoma's (when they're built right) and want to get one someday, at least just for the extra room and power. My neighbor down the street has a beautiful one that's lifted with rims/tire, etc. and looks really nice. I need to get him to join this sight!
I'll still never get rid of my '01 though, I love it! |

Had my '98 for 2 years till Toyota bought it back because of rusted frame(thank you Toyota).I loved it, plus it was payed off.But the 2nd gen. I love even more. It's kinda like picking your favorite child.

2nd Generation - IMO...Better Power, adults can actually fit in the double cab back seat, better looking front end, and excellent aftermarket support. However, if I had to drive anything else it would definitely be a 1st Generation. Kind of like splitting hairs.

1st gen. perfect size, the 2nd gen is too damn big.
the 01-04 double cab, however, isnt as good looking as the 05-09 double cab. access cab is the best. I like the 95.5-97 front end the best, but they have pickup leaf springs, not taco ones so overall not the best. plus, i really dont like automatic (not hating on the autos, just cant stand driving them), and the 2nd gen is much more common in auto (in my experience).

I love the 1st gens and wanted one.. Just could'nt find the one that I wanted when I was looking. So bought a 06 and it has grown on me huge ..I love it now!!!
Bitch is the toyota dealer is selling an 01 in mint shape right down the street from me now, thought about trading for it.. but as everyone says your truck grows on you. So my vote is 2nd gen, just cause I have one!!

For me, the placement it perfect. My truck has a manual transmission, so if I need to change the radio station my arm is in the same position basically as when I shift.

I loved my 96 I really liked the looks and it was bullitt proof I put 327,899 miles on it prior to Toyota buying it back. That being said I would not trade my 08 Double Cab Rugged Trail for my 96. I guess if I could have my 96 back to just wheel in that would be fine but all around the 08 is light years ahead of the old truck.
