I bought the Gates timing belt kit, with the belt, a tensioner pulley, and what looks like an idler pulley. The tensioner pulley is held tight by a hydraulic tensioner, yes? I want to replace that, too (looks like it's around $60 bux). If I'm pulling all that off, do I even need the Snap-On tool number YA9730? I read a bit and I'm getting the impression that the tool is used if you're just replacing the T-belt and not the tensioner. That tool is $50 bux.

What's correct... I still need the tool, or if I'm replacing everything then the tool is pointless?

If replacing all the components the tool is not needed.

Yea sorry, what Kalvin00 said. Should have said "Your impression is correct".

I'll add that the idlers and tensioners generally last for at least 2 scheduled belt changes and frequently much longer. If you don't intend on frequent forays into the t-belt nether regions, skip the tensioner tool.

Yeah this is T-belt change #2. I'm replacing everything. Already bought a Gates belt kit with the idler, tensioner pulley, and belt. Just need to order that hydro tensioner now.
