The cat on my truck had a rattle to it when the truck is Idleing and it is driving mt nuts. It sounds like marbles in there banging around.i want to fix this but don't want to buy a new cat, now we have California standards here in ny so I have to pass emissions. It just passed a month ago whith the rattleing going on so the cat must still be doing its job and I have no codes or check engine lights. If I were to take the cat off and try and bang out what ever is causing the rattle would this cause the cat to not do its job? I don't want to spend. $350 on a new cat.

Most likely if you were to "bang out" your cat you'd lose the ceramic honeycomb that is the functional portion of your cat. I'd just get a new catalytic converter, or a dog.

Well like I said I didn't want to have to buy a new one. So I guess I will have to live with the rattleing while it is still functional

Are you sure its the cat and not just a hanger?

This happened to my Mustang. I talked to a mechanic who said to replace it soon because if it were to get clogged from whatever is rattling in there, it's going to be bad news.

If that's the case I will tAke it out and bang it out. I have another year till next inspection. And yes I checked the heat shield, I was hoping that was going to be the issue

You might be able to find them close to that on eBay. I got the whole y-pipe with both cats for less than $500 for my Mustang.

I don't know about NY, but down here if you beat a cat and try to make it do something it's considered animal cruelty.

Sorry my mistake 275-300 after shipping for a New York leagal cat, still don't want to have to spend that. I guess we have the same standards as California where would you get yours for cheaper, that's what I coins on rockauto

This is why I like dogs lol :p no I would check to make sure its not a hanger or heat shield, if its on the inside I would replace/fix it because it could be restricting flow.. You could always buy a loud intake or sound system to drown the sound out lol

Yeah, cats have definitely gotten cheaper. I had a couple of them installed on a 2004 GTO and my total cost was $300 if I remember correctly...

Replace the cat with some pipe. When you have to do the test put the cat back on temparary if it still works.
