I have a 99 Prerunner with 2.7L 3RZ with 221,xxx Miles and I was planning on changing the trans and diff fluid this upcoming monday. As far as I know the previous owner hasnt replaced either of the fluids. Anything to look for to see if I really need to change my fluids ? or Should I even do it, heard theres can be problems with your trans after a fluid change..

What color is your trans fluid now?

Never hurts to drain and fill your diff fluid.

I think the last time I checked it, I remember it being like a light brown with a hint of red

Ive already heard that flushes cause alot of problems cause of piece getting pushed into gears ?

^^^ strange , I have never heard of this . On older model vehicles , I have heard that flushing without removing the pan first can cause any sediment in the pan to travel into the valve body and possibly stick one of the spool valves

What is too high a mileage to do a flush? Is there a general,'rule of thumb' for this?

I am at 145K now. The dealer did a flush at 80K with no ill affects. I have been considering doing it again as a precaution. I have seen the fuild temps hit 235*F (scangauge) on several occasions when wheeling.

In your opinion, is this a wise/safe thing to do at 145K? The fluid still looks and smells correct.

You can change the diffs & transfer case yourself.

But the Auto tranny isn't something you can do yourself unless you have the proper tools/equipment to flush it.

Have your garage give you another quote for ONLY trans flush.

Nobody can make up your mind for you. If it were me...I'd have the tranny flushed and I'd change diffs, transfer case, lubricate driveshafts, etc.
Auto transmission fluid should be RED and transparent.

I agree with Janster . You cant ask us what condition your transmission is in.
How could we possibly know the condition of your trans ?
We can only make recomendations from what has worked on our trucks .

I suggest taking the truck to a professional shop for a hot and cold road test before removing the transmission pan
