But, I wonder if any of this GL-5 business applies to full synth oil? When people talk about it, it is in reference to brass synchros. I wonder how much of that is someone said so I believe it and pass it along for someone else to say kind of thing. Since the manual states I can use GL-5 I went with it. AutoZone only carries GL-5 on the shelf, and they are the store practically on my corner, so they tend to get a lot of my $$.

I have heard a lot of good things about MT-90 so I will probably swap to that next 60k - it just wasn't anywhere I could lay hands on it, and I wanted to drain and fill on mine due to the hot shifter thing that was going on.

I've ran the severe gear for the last 75K (only has 91K on it) and have had zero problems with the GL-5.

    Thanks to all the replies,

I ordered MT-90 for the transmission and royal purple for the diff. Should be a lot better that whatever is inside now. ;)

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Get MT-90 no questions, makes it shift like butter.

I noticed a bit of better shifting with this Mobil 1. I have realized how many years it will be before I swap it again, given it will be doing way more sitting than driving once the Camry is full speed. Will have to remember MT-90 in 10 years or so!

Nice. Pay attention to the stuff that comes out - see if the color will cause you some concern.

I use Redline MT90 (GL-4) in my tranny & transfer case, Redline 75W90ns (GL-5 without LSD additive) for the front & rear differentials. I change every 45k and I don't tow. I just turned 200k miles and have ZERO noise, whine or anything else coming from any of the drive train and I grease the driveline zerks with a synthetic every oil change. I don't know what is the best interval, but that's what I've done and at 200,150 miles it's driving like the day I bought it.

I've used it for the last 160,000 miles and I like it a lot. NO noise coming from the tranny & it shifts nicely.

Another vote for MT 90 in the transmission here. Castroil Synthetic 75/90 in the diff. Can't remember what I put in the transfer case. The MT 90 in the trans improved the smoothness of shifting a lot.

Bought my 08 with 100k on it. I don't think the gear oil had ever been changed and MT-90 made a huge difference in shifting ease. 30k later now and it still feels really smooth.
