It's been about 38000 miles and 7 years between flushes and am wondering if some damage could be done with a new flush on my 2.4 auto? Thanks.

Not been towing or over heated but the fluid is not bright red. It's more a reddish brown and was told by the guy that changed my oil and filter that it should be flushed. Of course the 130 to 230 bucks he charges to do a flush might have something to do with it.

I never "flush" automatic transmissions. Usually does more harm than good. Just do a drain & fill the next few oil changes & that would get most of the old stuff out of there.

at 101k miles its due for a flush and refill if it were the original fluid but not if it was flushed 38k miles ago.

If the fluid is redish brown and smells burnt then i think the first guy just drained the pan and refilled it on you and never did a complete flush.

the process is simple and easy to do for automatics because you just let the tranny pump out the old fluid as it refills the tranny with the new fluid.

many people are afraid to flush a tranny because they don't know how to do it properly or they are just repeating old outdated info from older cars when changing old fluid could cause issues but that has not been the case for any newer designed transmission.

when in doubt flush your tranny and you obviously have doubts so do a flush yourself and then every 100k miles, or if it gets dark and smells burnt, then you do it again.

Good info on this forum! I also think the first flush was not complete as the oil should still be red in my mind. I might do it myself but where I live it's all dirt with no garage and the ads in the throwaways for trans flush at 80 bucks are tempting.

but you might get the same half ass job you got the first time

only you will take the time to do jobs the correct way, most shops do the minimum they can just to make money.

gotta be a lil patch of grass somewhere to lay on to do it

I plan on calling asking if the fluid will be a clean red (and let them know that I will check it on the spot) and if not I will do it myself. Why pay for a crap job like I think I did before.

they could drain and refill the pan and it will "look" red on dip stick but still be 50/50 old and new fluid and not be giving you the best protection or lifespan out of the tranny but if you don't want to get your hands dirty that's on you.

in your own words "Why pay for a crap job like I think I did before"

if you can find a shop that uses the BG products along with their machine that would be your overall best bet. you can stand there and watch it like a transfusion, it gets the old stuff out, suspends the burnt particles and removes them, it's like a three part flush. do the research on it, good stuff.

You don't think I would be asking if they just drain the pan and let them know that I would take it through the gears and then do the fluid check?

Most folks would not even watch them do the job and if I don't see a flush (that would be false advertising for starters) I would take it to a competitor and have it flushed then taking them to small claims if they don't foot the bill.

Thanks for letting me know I don't want to get my hands dirty. I wasn't aware of that and am glad you straightened that out for me and here all this time I thought it was because I have a bad back.

don't get your panties in a bunch, I was just telling you shops will lie all the time and you did say you were going to ASK them about it, you didn't say you were going to watch them do it.

sorry I tried to teach you something and help you save money, i'l try to remember not to do that in the future.

I sure can, and yet you continue to insult people who try to help you.

you rather pay a shop to do it as long as they know you will be checking the dip stick lol. good luck with that, im done here.

    have a nice day

Apparently you can't reread the post because it was you that made the crack about me not wanting to get my hands dirty. Making wise cracks like that is not only non productive but rude.

Nice link and idea about dropping the pan. Back in the bad old days I went to school for GM (GM training center in Burbank, ca. (Olds div.) but wound up at a Ford dealer before I got out of it, and we would drop the pan, change the filter, the fluid from the converter and adjust the bands if need be. Things have sure changed! Thanks for the input to all.
