hey guys i recently purchased a 1999 tacoma

    here are the specs:

    4x4 5 speed, regular cab, 2.7L 3rz-FE, manual hubs

the truck has 30x9.50.15 on the front, and 31x10.50x15 on the back.. all 4 tires are horrible, so im tire shopping. ive ran kelly safari TSR's for years, and found that they come in a 235/75/15 (which is damn close to 30x9.50x15) or a 31x10.50x15 size.

so i have those two options to choose from, not sure what my gear ratio is because its not on the door tag or anywhere else, and i dont have time to jack up the back end. what came stock on these? oh and 225/75/15 tires were the factory size on the door sticker

my question is: will the 31x10.50x15 rub in any situation, would i be better off with the smaller of the two or what? this truck will be offroad maybe 30% of the time

    thanks guys!

I have 31x10.50 on my '97 3rz and it pulls them fine. I get no rubbing but I have a leveling kit up front, not sure if they'll rub stock. There's a code on the door sticker that will tell you the gear ratio. Do a search and you should find the breakdown of the code on here I know its on here somewhere.

oh the vin number will indicate gear ratio also?

im worried about rubbing at full turn when the suspension is compressed some

With stock wheels 31's will fit just fine without rubbing at all.
Had them on my 96 and 98 both were non trd trucks.
If you have aftermarket wheels with different bs than stock then the may rub slightly.

Welcome to owning a 3rz... I thought my first one had something wrong with it but after driving a couple found out they all must be gutless turds.
Those are,the same wheels that were on both my trucks stock. 31s will fit no problem on stock suspension.

It should be on the door tag. My axle code is B04A (4.56 gears). Its on the lower right corner of the door tag next to the tranny code. Take another look.

If just put 31x10.50x15 on my bone stock 98' sr5 a few weeks ago. Had the equivalent of 29x8.50 on it before. Maybe a little more sluggish but after a day or so I didn't even notice it anymore. I went with the dick cepek mud countrys which were cheaper than the Kelly tsr but a little better tire as the cepeks have a 3 ply sidewall. Here is a link with pictures. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/wh...ed-up-some-dick-cepek-mud-countrys-today.html

No rubbing at all with stock wheels.

only reason i run kelleys, they are studdable, and also an all-terrain instead of mud. they are just an aggressive all terrain

Ya I agree the Kelly TSRs are very underrated. I actually think these cepeks look like a little more aggressive tsr lol. Ya I've had mine at full lock on hills & so far nothing. Its close though.

Not sure my gear ratio but my speedo wasn't affected all that much. At 30 on my speedo I'm actually going about 31. At 45 I'm actually doing about 47 or so & at 55 I'm doing closer to 58 or 59. I have an app on my phone that tells me but I haven't memorized the actual numbers yet. I'll check it again on my way to work.

you can also do it based on stock tire size vs now. my stock 225/75/15 from factory to 31x10.50x15 makes it about 5 mph off

Thats what my stock size is too & its pretty much 5 mph off when I'm going 60 but not at slower speeds. Up until about 30 its pretty much right on.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
I have a 1999 reg cab, 2.7ltr with a 5speed. It came with 31.5 x 10.5 x15's. I've driven it since new. It's a little tired now, 270,000, but has always rolled fine. The first 177k of it's life it pulled a 2000 lb trailer every day as a company truck.
