Could I swap a 4 Runner steering wheel and place it in my Tacoma ? I noticed 4 Runners came with a leather wrapped steering wheel as an option. It looks like it could be done being that they had the same 5vz-Fe's. Has anyone done this?

My guess is that it would be a bolt in deal since there are no steering wheel controls and your air bag should be compatible. You can also find leather wheels on the Tacoma Limited's. My '02 Limited probably has the same steering wheel as the 4Runner.

I don't think any came with a black interior, so probably not.

I've had a black leather 4Runner steering wheel on my 2.7L 02 Tacoma for several years. The airbag is different, so you'll need that too. The airbag hook-up is the same and the computer recognizes it. I also installed the factory cruise control and the cruise switch from the 4Runner wouldn't work with the Tacoma cruise computer. 4Runner has 3 wires, Tacoma 2. I suppose the 3rd wire is memory for resuming a preset speed after going below 35 MPH. Don't know that for sure, just guessing.

Another thought, Install the complete 4runner steering column. It is a simple install. All connections are the same.

At the risk of being flamed for posting this super old thread, I am going to revive it and do a write up on this and post I when I get home tomorrow. I just bought a 1999 4runner wheel for my '99 Taco. I found very little info on this after extensive research/googling. I got the whole column from the slip joint all the way out. I am pretty sure the swap will work. Be careful of the clock spring unwinding and the SRS 90 second reset. More to come.

    The Bed is stock...ish
I have swapped me steering wheel twice now on my white Tacoma, once on my LBT, and once on my 4runner that I sold.

Everything is very simple. Two torques head screws, one in either side of the wheel around the 3 and 9 o'clock position.

I have never needed a puller to get the wheels off. The nut is a 19mm. My mini impact buzzes it right off. I turn the wheel so the plastic backing on the wheel lines up with the column plastic. The I give it a few hard forward and back shakes at the 12 o'clock position and and 90* off from that till it comes free.

The two things people should know is that 1,there are two different types of cruise control. A two wire and three wire. They ate interchangeable with each other. I believe that the 01+ Tacoma and 4runners use 2 wire, and the 00 and older use a 3 wire. 2, if you swap to a 4 spoke wheel from a 2 spoke, you will likely want the 4 spoke wiper and turn signal controls. Also, you will never see your clock again as the upper right spoke blocks it... As seen in my picture.

    Other than that, it's simple.

I am not sure, but I believe that the 95-97 Tacoma's use a different clock spring and air bag connector. So, if you have a truck that is in that year range, you might want to pull yours apart and see what you are working with.

I replaced mine with 01-03 Lexus IS300. You can use same year RAV4 airbag and it will fit on this steering wheel if you want the Toyota logo. No issue with cruise control and air bag. Direct plug and play. Very easy to install.

I have the Lexus wheel minus airbag and cover I'd let go cheap if you find the rav4 components elsewhere.

Is the RAV4 airbag the single airbag squib type? Same plug as our trucks?

Oh good. Most airbags during that time period were the dual stage squibs with different connectors. That’s the only thing stopping us from using a 2018 Tacoma steering wheel. The spline on the steering shaft never changed.

Does anyone know if the cruise control on the 01-05 IS300 steering wheel is a 2 or 3 wire connection? I just bought one off of ebay to swap into my 2000 4cyl.

Won’t work. You have to re-solder the Tacoma resistors into the IS300 cruise control stalk. They work on resistances.

Is there a write up on this possibly? I would like to be retain my cruise control functionality. I don't mind doing some soldering and rewiring, but just am not sure how to about doing it in this situation.

Not really that hard. Just desolder the resistors from the Tacoma and IS300 stalk, trash the IS300 resistors, and re-solder the Tacoma resistors into the IS300 stalk.
