ok... so i will get to the fix's that i am performing on my 1998 tacoma 2.7l 4x4 with 220k miles on it in other threads...... but i have been leaking p/s fluid for a few years... nerver had a chance to fix until now with car in my garage.... needless to say the P/S cooling line that is a solid peice is giving way... has a rust spot on it that will go at any minute.... i am looking at replacing it with the following:

    HAYDEN Part # 1009

my question is has anyone replace this part yet and if so how have they installed an aftermarket cooler... i.e. where.... any help is appriecated... Thanks...

    the gimp...

My old 68 Buick Electra had a power steering cooler and it was just kinda hanging out in the air off to the side of the pump a bit but then a family of 4 could take up residence under the hood of that car. I would just place the cooler somewhere along the path of the original line, just not next to the exhaust.

if you needed one they would have put one on at the factory, power steering don't need coolers but you can buy a cooler for anything if you want to waste money.

I am not saying i need on. I have leak in the P/S line that is called P/S Cooler line.... i cant find the part anywhere and its about 120$$ its a solid molded line. so if its just meant to cooler the P/S fluid, which it looks like it does, i can just but an after market one from Rock auto for 20 bucks. either way i need to replace this damn line so the car will drive...

Don't ya love it when someone tries to give you pointers on what you need to do but only reads the first couple lines of your post..... I don't see why the aftermarket cooler won't resolve the issue as long as its built well enough to not leak...

you got a picture of this so-called ps cooler? the only thing I see is a crossover line that is NOT for oil cooling but its there to simply transfer fluid from one side of the rack to the other as the steering moves.

if that's what you are talking about replace the line with another oem one or get one from the salvage yard

Keakar your 2wd might not have this part. On both my trucks there is a line from the rack over to the cross member right in front of the front diff(not looking at the truck but its right there) it goes bout half way across then double backs on itself and heads back to the pump. It most definitely is a cooling line. That's why the OP wants to replace his rusted out line with an aftermarket cooler.

ok then, its a 4wd thing

seams dumb that toyoto made it from steel and wouldn't have made it from aluminum but maybe an aluminum cooler cant hold up to the pressures in the ps system? I would still source a salvage yard replacement before using a cheap generic cooler on it.

Keakar only the pump to rack hose is a high pressure hose. The return line is low pressure.

To the OP I too would try a lil harder to source the original style line instead of the aftermarket cooler.

i have tried 4 yards around here and even looking at geting something on line with no luck. its why i am asking a forum the questions i am... i am at my end with this thing. i have alot going on at home, i work two jobs (16 hrs a day), wife with two little kids that needs here car back from me and money is tight. i would totally prefer what you guys are telling me. but i NEED my truck on the road again. when i have found something remotely close (different year) its 14+ more. this isnt a fix i need to last forever. just a year or 2 until i can but a new truck.

thanks for all the help so far.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking at, but Rock Auto has a power steering cooler for your truck for $20. It might include the failed line. Worth a check, anyway.

Edit: I also see that they have a pressure line for $120. So, you may be stuck with that price.

funny you mention rockauto... that is the cooler i am refering to and thinking of puchasing to replace what i have. it does not come with the line that has failed. the presure line they have is not the same piece, already looked into that.

I would just do the aftermarket cooler and get it driving again.

Yup just get the cooler and get on the road! I know what its like to have power steering issues!, it sucks big time! If the cooler holds more capacity than the original you might have to put a bit more fluid into the system so its not starving(just a thought.) good luck bud! Its a real bitch when everything else(life) gets in the way, makes vehicle issues a nightmare sometimes.

yeah... thanks for the help.. its one of 4 problems that i now have that i am trying to solve/fix with the truck....

started with the clutch going, then the harmonic balancer... i had the P/S leak i thought i would look at while fixing the other two and an oil leak that has gotten worse... since this is so bad it turned into 3 things and well the oil pan is eating itself and weaping oil... so i have another thread i started that now that no one answered too... to replace the oil pan do i need to drop the front Diff... i think you have the clearance to not have to do that... but im an engineer, what do i know....

On my 99 2.7 with AT, the rubber PS return line (from the pump) is only about 2 feet long, and attaches to a steel line that loops in front the timing cover, just behind the radiator. I think this is the part that the OP is talking about. Just a plain line with no ribs or fins. I assume that the other end connects to the rack's short rubber "return line".

Not looking at the rig bit I think you can prolly drop the oil pan but I'm afraid you wouldnt be able to then get the pan fully outta there....

Did you end up ordering the steering cooling line??
