So I have a 1999 Tacoma with a 3.4l with an automatic. Long story short my tranny went out. I have been looking at used trannys and when I crawl under mine the model number on the tranny is 30-40, all the used trannys i have found say 30-80 but are out of tacomas with 3.4l also. My question is will a 30-80 swap with my 30-40 or are they completely different? And the setup I'm looking at would be complete from the bell housing back to the t -case

Is this a TRD model ? & highlighted is your indication of 4x4, this is important, if 4x, you need to find the A340F (which is what you have now if 4x) The A340E is the automatic for 2x (prerunners) & yeah a good used trans is probably the way to go, when mine went out on my 2000 I got quotes of up to $3400 to rebuild. Found a great used one for $1000 out the door w/60 day warranty & this was about 3 years ago still holding up fine..

How many miles did you get out of yours? Any idea why it failed?

If you guys are asking me , my trans went out at 170k & most likely because of all the maintenance things that I get anal about, NOT doing the flush & fill every 35k as recommended it grenaded on me one day after having a couple of unusually hard upshifts earlier..

Thanks for the replies everyone! I got 273,000 before it failed, the motor spun a bearing at 250.000 and was replaced but I guess the tranny decided to follow. My plan is to start pulling the tranny today so hopefully I can get a better idea of what failed. It has been shifting hard for quite a while and the a/t temp light came on the day it died so I'm guessing i have a cooling issue also so yesterday I picked up a Hayden 1678 to add when I'm putting in the used tranny

Good to hear bro', just do the recommended 35k drain & fill like Toyota says & you'll be fine, amazed yours lasted as long as it did...

I've done a mod or two
Don't forget to flush out the stock tranny cooler as well, don't want that gunk in your new tranny.
