2002 Toyota Tacoma Auto Shifter Bulb

Does anyone know the part number for the auto shifter bulb on a gen 1 Tacoma?

I bought a 74-W from www.superbrightleds.com (74 is the bulb size)

 

Wasted time and money listening to this guy. Its NOT a 74.

Just went to the dealer and the bulb is actually cheaper there anyways.

 

Sorry you felt the need to revive a 4 year old post, but I've been using it for almost 4 years now so what your problem is

 

It’s a 2721 for reference. I just replaced mine a couple of days ago.

 

A lot of folks search through this forum for answers, age of the thread is irrelevant. It’s the first link on google when searching 2002 Tacoma shift bulb. I’m helping the next guy out by speaking up. 74 is close but not a fully snug fit and would often disconnect. It’s also a tad longer than oem. Best to go to the dealer since it’s only 5 bucks.

I replaced mine a few years ago in my 2002 and now I'm doing it again. I used a 37LL (Part No. 37LLBP2 from Advanced) it fit and worked fine. It is a little bigger (see Pic). But I definitely agree with bsedgal, that at $5.99 for two at Advanced and I paid $3.22 for one at the dealership. The original one lasted 10+ years and the 37ll lasted like five years.

 

Just replaced mine as well. They've been out going on 3 years.

While the dealership is not a place I choose to go to often the convenience of being able to access exploded diagrams of random things like small bulbs is helpful. I was in and out with the two bulbs (paid $8) in a matter of minutes. Took about 20 to disassemble and reassemble the interior parts and install the bulbs. Just for fun I asked the service department how much it would cost to replace the two small bulbs while the vehicle was there for an oil change. They quoted me $90 just to replace the shifter assembly bulb!

 

Sounds about right. The book probably lists 1 hour labor for that job, so at $80 hourly labor rate (which is actually pretty cheap these days, esp. for a dealership) plus $10 charged for parts = $90.

From memory you only have to remove 2 screws on the front of the main center unit and the trim from around the shifter lifts off. From there you should be able to access the bulk. Even with figuring it out as I went it probably took 6-8 minutes from start to finish.

I have a 2003 DC and the trim piece around the shifter knobs is a separate piece from the main center console unit. It was the easier of the two that I did because there was very minimal hardware to remove.

 

easy peasy to get to that bulb. The hardest part is getting that part with the cupholder up,away from the console it slides up against.And back again. I replace my bulb and it's still not working...Check fuses next? So I'm looking for a guide to which fuse does what...

Thread back from the dead...I can confirm that the Sylvania 2721 Long Life Mini Bulb (from Advance Auto) is exactly the same as the oem bulb should anyone be searching.

I was even able to remove and reuse the 'condom' from the oem bulb after these 20 years...

Why not go LED if you're in there replacing it? Then never do it again.

 

Funny you ask - LED bulbs on the way. Should've bought those first, just got in too much of a hurry.

Doing the glove box also.

 

Can confirm that it's a 2721. I reused the rubber too.

 

It's wild how this thread magically re-appears whenever my shifter bulb goes out.

The fact I am back here once again means I am getting bulb from Toyota this time around. (The last two bulbs came from AutoZone.) Hopefully that will last as long as the OG bulb.
