Just changed a leaking radiator, and then topped off the transmission fluid.
Weather has been between 6 degrees and 11 degrees the last couple of mornings. When I crank her up and pull out of the garage in reverse it's fine until I'm in the road and put her in drive and it just sits there or is very slow until it warms up a bit.

Any ideas on what could be going on?

    It's a 2000 3.4 prerunner.

I am dealing with the same thing right now. Check fluid level and make sure it not low.

I'm planning to drop the pan and change the filter this weekend. I'm thinking that the filter may be getting clogged while the fluid is still cold (thicker).

mine has never liked going out of 2nd when its cold until it warms up for a mile or so. Leaking radiator? Wasn't leaking into the transmission cooler was it?

I have exact same problem. When cold it will not want to shift out of second.

Fluid has got to get nice & warm to expand , then things start running like they should, you guys in cold/sub zero environments are going to experience this time to time I'd think...

Mine has been doing this since new. Even after s fluid change it's the same. It just likes to run all nice and warm. Just be easy on it, mine will eventually shift into third at about 2750 rpm or so.

Toyota tends to do this in order to get the drive train warmed up. My dad's 2010 corolla does the same and he contacted the dealership and the technician said that toyota holds back the shifts points to get it warmed up sooner.

The issue here is when initially put into drive on a cold start (for me, around 0-10 deg F) the transmission slips and the truck will barely move if at all until warmed up a bit. Reverse is fine, Low is fine... at least for me.
Most transmission will hold onto gears longer until the engine warms up.

Have you checked the level of the fluid after you topped it off and drove around for a bit? Also is the fluid still nice and pink and not have a burnt smell?

by the way, if you've ever noticed the little sticker on the AT dipstick it says that you do not need to change the fluid under normal driving conditions. had a Toyota tech tell me this as well. don't have a manual handy to see if there is a scheduled maintenance for this.

1st gens are supposed to be "drain & fill" every 35k IIRC for the A340F automatic..

    hmm, just went to:

    http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/guides.php

and it looks like it's every 30k... but mainly for "special operating conditions" which is towing or dusty/back roads. most of them say to inspect the ATF but not to change it unless it meets that special condition.
