Hello, I have concluded that my 02 2wd Pre-Runner needs new front wheel bearings. It has 170k miles so I think it's done pretty well.
I can handle most tasks with a little research. Problem is, I cant find much info on the first gen Tacoma wheel bearing replacement.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If they are like the 4WD bearings, they have to be pressed out and in and can be quite the PITA. Most people take the spindles to a competent garage or dealership and have them do it for them.

Looks like that's what I'm gonna do. Spoke to a dude today at a local garage, said he'd do it for 150-160 bux. I'm on that like white on rice.

    Thanks!!

save your money guys, the 2wd trucks have normal standard 2 piece bearings that are easy to replace for under $30 for both sides.

the rotors on these trucks cost $30 each and are bolted on from the back side of the hub so since the hubs have to come off to replace/regrease the bearings, this is the time to replace the brake rotors if there is any signs or wear on them.

I suggest you cover all bases and do brakes and bearings together since you have to take them off anyways.

nothing is pressed on unless you have a 4wd truck

Completely false, prerunners are the same as 4wd as far as the bearings.

    thanks, I didn't realize that

geez that's stupid, do they have CV joints too?

if prerunner is a 4wd only using 2wd they should just call it that

thank god I wasn't dumb enough to buy a prerunner with all the extra expense for everything

No CV axles, no front diff, no front drive shaft, no transfer case.

Not sure what you mean by "4WD only using 2WD".

because it seams everything on a prerunner uses 4wd parts, the only thing missing is the axles and differential

why does a 2wd prerunner need $80 press in bearings requiring shop service while a regular 2wd uses $6 bearings that are not pressed in that anyone can do in their driveway

    Ah. Gotchya now.

I'm guessing Toyota identified a large buyer segment that wanted the more rugged look but not the added expense. Easy solution was to modify the 4wd models by removing the front drive mechanisms.

The prerunner even came with the rear locker on the TRD models.
