I've been searching for a used tacoma 4x4 manual for the past 3 months. I went from a budget of 7k to 10k to try and get something with low miles (at least under 150k) and in good shape, but it has been incredibly difficult. While I know there is a market of buyers out there who will pay for these trucks at any cost, I also know there are buyers like myself, who just cannot see any sense in spending over $10k for a truck with a sh*t ton of miles or in rough shape.

I also have read many tacoma enthusiasts claim that these trucks will run for close to 300k miles, though I believe this is only possible from a responsible owner that takes care of their vehicles meticulously, which I know not everyone is.

I guess what I'm trying to get at in this post is, do any of you have similar experiences or have similar feelings when seeing some of the trucks for sale these days? I find it ridiculous how many people out there want 4-5 thousand dollars over blue book value for their trucks, many of which don't seem to be taken care of all that well.

That's why I just bought a nearly new truck from the dealer when I did.

The previous owner overheated my truck and ruined the transmission and my truck is still like new at 160k.

If you want cheaper, look at something other than a Toyota.

You're not gonna have much luck finding a Toyota truck thats cheap. If it's something you have an issue with, you'll probably have to move on to another brand that depreciates much faster.

Because if you buy one for 10k, put 100,000 extra miles on it, and you can still probably sell it for 7. You can find a good truck for 10k.

These trucks are popular, reliable, small enough to take most anywhere, pretty capable off-road stock and hold their value because many people realize this.

I have a nice California truck within your budget - just see my thread in the FS section.

Why so much? Because they don't depreciate as fast.

I couldn't find a first gen under 10k when I got my 2005. It had 99k on it and I paid 13k if you want to spend less than 10k on a truck, then buy a Chevy or Ford. At least you'll know that you're going to have to spend money on the problems they will have. Otherwise, save your money and buy a used one with low miles or suck it up and buy a brand new one. these trucks will run for a long time without problems.

Thought about selling my 04 with 67K on it and would not even consider less that $16k , for it. There good trucks run for ever!

I spent 6.5k on my 2000 4x4 with 206k on the clock a few months ago. I bought it after looking at a few prerunners that had less miles but were in really bad shape. Gotta pay to play but it did seem like they have less of a premium here, if I had 10k to spend I would've definately gotten one with less miles. Our saved the extra for mods/maintenance

I paid 11k for my 02 4x4 with 94k on it. They are not cheap but they are worth it. Reliable as hell and ttough as nails.

In the early 2000's I bought a 93 toyota pickup sr5 4x4 for $6000. After keeping it for a while I sold it for, guess what, $6000. I basically owned that truck for free.

I do wished I would have kept it though. It was in great shape.

I live in So Cal too... the prices on these trucks have gone up a lot over the last few years. It's a matter of supply and demand, not KBB. KBB is not very meaningful in the private used market.

I sold a 2004 extra cab 4x4 v6 auto with 70K miles for $2K more than I paid for it when I bought it with $35K miles a few years ago. I had to pay a lot to get a 2004 DC to replace it.... it's just what they go for, it sucks - unless you're the seller.

    Welcome to T.W man.
Here you go. Take that moneys that you have saved or have been saving and put down on something you want. New, used. Whatever looks good. If you can. It will be worth it . And then you can sell it. If you dont put mods and etc. Into it yourself. And end up keeping it.
It is going to be a little difficult to find a manual 4x4 thou. We live in a place where people dont want to deal with the stick in the traffic.

The market for these in California is all fucked up. Try going out of state, that is your best bet, especially if looking for a manual. I went up to Idaho and found one. Spent way less than I would have in Socal, and that included my one way flight and gas driving it down. But like everyone else says they hold value well and run forever! I quickly went from buying a used one to getting a new one when I discovered that. Good luck!

Yeah the problem is that to get a good used car deal you have to be flexible on model. If you are not you can either buy new or nearly-new or risk getting screwed. A lot of both Honda and Toyota vehicles hold their value at a level beyond what they are really worth. The Kelley Blue Book prices are telling you what dealers are paying for them but Craigslist and other private party ad listings will show them much higher, and people do often get these prices because there are a limited number of these vehicles out there (especially once you restrict it down to 4x4 or not, options or cab size, color, etc.). Just because there are people who will pay for overpriced vehicles does not make them a good deal.

On any vehicle 150k+ is a lot of miles and you are buying a previous owner (or a set of previous owners) a lot more than you are buying a name brand. I will take a well-maintained S10 or Ranger over a poorly maintained Tacoma.
